To use American Express with Apple Pay, open the Wallet app on a compatible Apple device and follow the steps to add an eligible Amex card. You’ll see a blue check mark once your card has been verified, and you’ll be able to use the card through Apple Pay with any merchant who accepts contactless payments and Amex.
To use Amex with Apple Pay at a physical merchant, simply hold up your device to the reader and put your finger on the Touch ID for an iPhone, or double-tap the side button for an Apple Watch. Those actions will trigger the payment. For in-store payments, an iPhone 6 or any later version of the iPhone qualifies as a compatible Apple device, along with any Apple Watch.
If you’re hoping to use Amex with Apple Pay for online shopping, you can also set it up on certain Mac and iPad devices. For these devices, you’ll still follow the instructions on the Wallet app, which can be found in System Preferences on Macs. Once Apple Pay is set up, you’ll be able to click the Apple Pay option at check-out with eligible retailers and follow the instructions to make a payment.
Many credit cards and charge cards issued by Amex, including any American Express consumer or small business card, can link to Apple Pay. Most American Express corporate cards––such as Green, Gold, Platinum, Centurion, and Business Extra––are also eligible, as are certain Amex prepaid cards.
