The American Express authorized user age requirement is 13. Primary Amex cardholders can make anybody aged 13 or older an authorized user on an American Express credit card account, provided the additional cardholder has never had a defaulted account with American Express. You can easily add Amex authorized users online.
How to Add American Express Authorized Users
- Log in to your American Express account.
- Click “Account Services.”
- Choose “Add Someone to Your Account,” and follow the prompts from there.
Once the additional cardholder receives their card, the primary cardholder will have 60 days to provide proof of the authorized user’s date of birth. You will not need to do this if a Social Security Number and date of birth have already been provided during the application process.
To provide the cardholder’s date of birth, call American Express at (800) 528-4800 and state the authorized user’s SSN and birth date over the phone. If the authorized user does not have a Social Security number, you can ask an Amex representative about other acceptable government-issued forms of proof.
