No, you cannot upgrade the American Express Platinum card. That’s because there isn’t a better offer to upgrade. But you can upgrade a different American Express card to the American Express Platinum card. Just keep in mind that Amex only allows upgrades to cards within the same card family. For example, you cannot upgrade from a personal credit card to a business or co-branded card.
To see if your American Express card is eligible for an upgrade to the American Express Platinum card, log in to your online account and check the “Amex Offers” section. You can also call American Express customer service at (800) 528-4800 to check for upgrade eligibility. American Express also sends out upgrade offers to existing cardholders by mail, email, and through their online account. Sometimes, those offers come with bonuses.
Other things to know about the American Express Platinum card:
Other than upgrading to the American Express Platinum card, there are a few other “upgrades” involving the card and its benefits. For example, you can use the card’s annual airline credits for seat upgrades, as long as the charges are separate from any airfare charges.
