Blue Cash Preferred counts Kroger as a supermarket, making it eligible to earn 6% cash back on store purchases, up to $6,000 annually, when charged to the card. The higher earnings rate applies to purchases at U.S. supermarkets and online supermarkets, as long as the transaction is categorized with the merchant category code for supermarkets and grocery stores.
Amex does not classify retailers like Target and Walmart as grocery stores, which means purchases charged to the Blue Cash Preferred card get just 1% cash back. Other merchants that do not qualify for 6% cash back rewards are warehouse clubs, convenience stores, gourmet shops, specialty stores, and more.
