Blue Cash Preferred does not count Walmart as a supermarket, which means that Walmart purchases are not eligible for the card’s 6% cash back rate. Purchases at Walmart get 1% cash back – the same rate as any other purchases that don’t fall into the Blue Cash Preferred Card’s bonus categories.
Every merchant is assigned a merchant code by the credit card networks based upon the type of business they conduct. Since Walmart is a big-box store that sells all kinds of items, and groceries are only a fraction of their business, they do not receive the merchant code for “supermarkets.” Amex Blue Cash Preferred only gives 6% cash back to grocery purchases in the U.S. marked with the “supermarkets” merchant code.
If you’re looking for a good credit card to use for your Walmart purchases, consider the Walmart Store Card or Walmart Credit Card. And if you want to use your Blue Cash Preferred Card for groceries, some popular eligible stores include Meijer, Shoprite, Stop and Shop, Gristedes, Foodtown, Vons, Whole Foods and Winn-Dixie.
