Virtual credit cards cannot be used for in-person purchases. They are just an option offered by several issuers for better protection against fraud when shopping online or over the phone.
If you want to buy gas, you must do it in person with an actual credit card instead of a virtual one.
This is 100% incorrect, both the answer and the reason virtual cards exist. What you do is, add your virtual card to an Apple pay or Google wallet on your phone, and you can use it anywhere Google or Apple pay is accepted. This is essential for if you have to replace a lost or stolen card and are waiting for the new physical card. You can alternatively add your virtual card to most gas station apps directly and pay that way.
