There are no Chase Freedom Flex department stores at the moment; Chase announced the bonus 5% cash-back categories for the first two quarters of 2021 and they do not include any department stores. The remaining categories, though, will be released throughout the year.
More specifically, the bonus 5% cash-back categories for April – June 2021 include gas stations and home improvement stores. As for the bonus categories of this year’s first quarter, they included wholesale clubs, internet, cable, phone services and select streaming services.
When department stores are not a bonus category, you’ll earn 1% cash back on those purchases.
So, Chase Freedom Flex has not yet included the department stores bonus category, but the original Chase Freedom® had it multiple times. When the original Chase Freedom®’s bonus categories included department store purchases in the past, a few notable stores (or types of stores) weren’t included: Walmart, Target, Kmart, TJ Maxx (and other discount sellers), along with electronics sellers and “general merchandise and variety stores.”
Ultimately, if “department stores” returns as a category on the Chase Freedom Flex card, you’ll be able to view the full list of eligible stores on the Chase Freedom Flex bonus calendar. It will also show you when and how to activate the 5% rewards rate.
