The Discover Student Card foreign transaction fee is $0. Both the Discover it Student Card and the Discover it Student chrome Card have $0 foreign fees. In fact, no Discover cards have this type of international surcharge. Typically, issuers that charge a foreign transaction fee will add an extra 1% - 3% onto the purchase amount for any transaction processed outside the U.S.
Students will enjoy a wealth of perks and features from the Discover Student card in addition to no foreign transaction fee. Among them are a $0 annual fee, 5% cash back each quarter on purchases in select bonus categories, and 1% back on all other purchases. In addition, students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or better will earn an annual $20 statement credit for up to 5 years. Discover also doubles cash back earned by new cardholders the first year.
The big drawback is that the Discover student credit cards, and all cards on the Discover network, do not have quite the same worldwide acceptance as Mastercard or Visa cards. The Journey Student Rewards Card from Capital One, which also has no foreign transaction fee, is one attractive alternative. It’s on the Mastercard network, which means you can use the card at merchants in more than 210 countries and territories. By comparison, merchants in around 190 countries and territories accept Discover cards.
