To freeze an American Express card, call Amex customer service at (800) 528-4800, log in to your Amex account online, or use the Amex mobile app.
Here’s how to freeze an American Express card:
- Online: To freeze an Amex card online, select “Account Services” after logging in, then choose “Freeze Your Card” under the “Card Management” section, and click the blue “Freeze Card” button.
- Through the mobile app: If you are on the app, select “Account” at the bottom right of the screen once you’ve logged in. Then, choose “More Options,” click “Freeze or Unfreeze a Card,” and finally pick an Amex card to freeze.
- Via phone: Call customer service at (800) 528-4800. Then, enter your account information and follow the prompts to connect to a representative.
Once you freeze a card, American Express will confirm that the card will be frozen for a week before it automatically unfreezes. While the card is frozen, recurring charges will post to your account as they normally do. You will also still be able to make digital wallet purchases and online transactions with many merchants who already have your card on file.
If you’d like to unfreeze your card at any point during the 7-day period, log back in to the Amex account. If you log in online, follow the same steps you took to freeze the card. On the app, you will see a button that says “Unfreeze your card” on the home page. Once you unfreeze your American Express card, you’ll be able to make purchases with it again.
