A credit card authorization is also called a “hold.” When you make a transaction or give your card information to a merchant to charge later, you “authorize” the merchant to take up a certain amount of your credit line. That amount of your credit is then immediately unavailable to use until the hold ends.
Credit card authorizations are pretty straightforward when the exact purchase amount is available upfront. For example, buying $100 of groceries creates a $100 hold on your card. Then, once the merchant charges your card, the $100 hold becomes a $100 balance. But that’s not always the case, especially with things like gas purchases, hotel reservations and restaurant tips.
A gas pump does not know in advance how much gas you will need. A hotel doesn’t know how many incidentals you will charge, and a server doesn’t know how much you will tip. Those situations will all put a hold on your account for a set amount before the final total is determined. But you will only get charged for the amount you actually owe at the end of the day.
For most transactions, like buying something in a store, you should expect to only wait a short period. The transaction won’t instantly show up, but the authorization hold for the exact total will be there until you get charged.
How long a credit card authorization lasts:
An authorization lasts 1-90 days. It will stay until the merchant clears it or it “falls off” your account.
When a merchant clears the authorization, it means they’ve completely processed the transaction and received payment.
If a merchant doesn’t clear the hold, it will expire on its own based on your credit card issuer’s policy. But the maximum number of days for a hold to expire is set by the card network. The longest hold period, 30 days, is allowed on Visa cards. For most American Express cards, it’s 7 days. And it’s 10 days for Discover. Mastercard does not specify a maximum.
With most transactions, the authorization will be for the amount of the purchase. Hotel stays, dining out at restaurants, and putting gas in your car are all exceptions because the purchase total is not clear at the outset.
In some cases, the hold is different from your actual charge. Hotels have holds for your room price plus $50-$200 per day for incidentals, for example. You only get charged for what you actually used. But until the transaction is finalized, you won’t be able to use the amount of the hold. Restaurants and gas stations are other places you may use your card before you know exactly how much you’re spending.
A credit card authorization can be annoying since it has the potential to tie up your credit limit for an amount you might not actually spend. Even if you don’t wind up using room service or trashing your hotel room, for example, more than just your room price will be put on hold when you make a reservation with your credit card.
However, keep in mind that credit card holds go away once the merchant is paid or automatically after 30 days, at most. They won’t affect your credit utilization, either. So if you have $500 in holds from a hotel but only get charged $200, your issuer will only report that you used $200 of your credit line.
