The top USAA credit card benefits include a 4% APR for active-duty military personnel, 2,500 bonus points and 5% cash back on select categories. Some benefits are standard on all USAA credit cards and others are specific to a few cards.
USAA credit cards are for U.S. military servicemembers and their families (spouses and adult children) and military academy enrollees. But the benefits aren’t all military-related. You’ll also get things like rental car insurance, price protection, and even concierge services.
Here are the top USAA credit card benefits:
- 4% APR during deployment and PCS (Permanent Change of Station)
Servicemembers eligible for a 4% APR during deployment. APR good for 12 months during deployment and lasts until one year after active duty is completed. Rate applies to all balances incurred before entering active duty. Available on all USAA credit cards.
- 2,500 initial bonus points
All USAA credit cards with an initial rewards bonus give you 2,500 points after your first purchase. Examples include the USAA Rewards American Express Card, USAA Rewards Visa Signature and Together We Served credit cards. That bounty is worth $25, redeemable for cash, merchandise, gift cards or travel purchases.
- Rewards for every purchase
USAA rewards credit cards have an earning rate of at least 1% back on all purchases. The USAA Cashback Rewards Plus American Express Card earns a maximum of 5% back on gas and military base purchases (items purchased at commissaries or exchanges on base) up to $3,000 spent every year. Other rewards earn anywhere from 1.5% - 3.5% on dining, groceries and all other purchases. Rewards not available on USAA secured cards and the Rate Advantage Visa Platinum.
Most USAA cards offer a balance transfer deal: 0% interest for 12 months with a 3% transfer fee ($200 maximum). Transfers must post within three months of when you open your account to get that deal. Balance transfers not available on USAA secured credit cards or the Rate Advantage Visa Platinum and American Express Rewards cards.
Nearly all USAA credit cards have no annual fees. The exceptions are the secured cards, which charge $35 per year.
- No foreign transaction fees
USAA no longer charges a foreign transaction fee on any of its credit cards.
USAA credit cards do not have a penalty APR. You will be charged a $35 fee for any late payments.
USAA’s Visa and American Express card benefits include rental car insurance, price protection, travel assistance, concierge service and extended warranties.
USAA credit cards are fairly similar in the benefits they offer. You won’t find huge initial bonuses or especially long 0% periods, but perks such as the 4% interest rate for deployment and no foreign transaction fees are a perfect complement to military families’ unique lifestyles.
