The Capital One Venture card is good for travelers with good credit who want at least double miles on all purchases and flexibility when booking travel. As a general travel rewards card, it isn't tied to a specific airline or hotel chain. Additionally, new cardholders can earn a one-time bonus of 75,000 miles by spending $4,000 within the first 3 months. Capital One Venture also provides 5 miles per dollar spent on select travel purchases and has no foreign transaction fees. Considering the substantial value of the initial bonus, the card's $95 annual fee is easily offset for several years.
What The Capital One Venture Card Is Good For
A chance to earn a big initial bonus
Capital One Venture offers 75,000 miles for spending $4,000 in the first 3 months. Those bonus miles are worth $750 when redeemed for travel-related purchases. If you’re looking to redeem miles for cash back and reap maximum rewards, Capital One Venture would not be a good card for you. Miles lose half their value when you redeem them for cash back.
Flexible travel bookings
The Capital One Venture Card allows you to redeem miles for nearly any travel-related purchase after it posts to your account. This will give you the best redemption rate for your reward miles. You can also use your miles to book flights and hotels through the Capital One Travel website, which does not limit you to a specific airline or hotel chain. Plus, you can transfer miles to a number of airline and hotel partners, usually at a 1:1 ratio, and then redeem them through the partner’s loyalty program.
At least 2% back on all purchases
Cardholders earn 2 miles / $1 spent pretty much every time they make a purchase with the Capital One Venture Card. Hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel are the exception, getting you 5 miles / $1 spent. Miles are worth 1 cent each when redeemed for travel.
Wide-ranging definition of “travel”
One of the advantages of using the Capital One Venture Card to redeem miles for previous travel purchases is that Capital One paints its travel category with a broad brush. It includes expenses such as travel agent fees, train tickets and taxi fares, along with airfare, rental cars, hotel reservations and more.
No foreign fee
Like all Capital One credit cards, Capital One Venture comes with a $0 foreign transaction fee, which means you won’t be charged a fee for any purchases processed outside of the U.S. Foreign transaction fees on other cards are typically 3% of the purchase amount.
