Montgomery Ward was called “Monkey Wards” by some people because it reportedly once offered exotic monkeys in some of its stores and through its mail-order catalog. Today, the store’s website features a Monkey Wards page where customers can shop and place orders for many of the retailer’s popular items. The Montgomery Ward website does not cite where the nickname originated, though.
Founded in 1872, Montgomery Ward revolutionized retail sales at the turn of the century through its mail-order catalog, which was the only one of its kind back then. The retailer currently offers the Montgomery Ward Credit Account, an unsecured store credit card designed for people with bad credit. Customers can only use the card for Montgomery Ward purchases, either online or by phone.

This is actually a wives tale. It was called Monkey Wards simply because when said: "Montgomery Ward" quickly (and also how many children said it, it easily sounds like: "Monkey Wards". Throughout time many stories like these evolve to become funny tales, Ala = rumors.
