Yes, new drivers need car insurance once they are legally able to drive, either with a permit or a full license. For many new drivers, the best way to get car insurance is to be added to a parent’s existing policy, as this is significantly cheaper than buying a separate policy on their own.
Some new drivers may already be covered by a parent’s existing policy if they are using a covered vehicle with a parent’s permission. Even drivers with learner’s permits, who usually need to be with an adult when practicing, can be covered by a parent’s existing policy.
New drivers under the age of 18 may need to have a cosigner if they choose to get their own policy, and all new drivers must have at least their state’s minimum required amount of coverage. They should also consider purchasing as much additional coverage as they can comfortably afford.
Commonly Required Types of Insurance for New Drivers
- Liability insurance to pay for other drivers’ injuries and vehicle repairs after accidents caused by the policyholder.
- Personal injury protection (PIP) insurance to cover the policyholder’s medical expenses regardless of fault.
- MedPay to cover the policyholder’s medical expenses (with no deductible).
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance to protect the policyholder if they are in an accident caused by a driver who either doesn’t have insurance or lacks sufficient coverage.
Other Types of Insurance for New Drivers
New drivers may also be required to have collision and comprehensive insurance if they have a leased or financed vehicle. Even if they aren’t required, collision and comprehensive insurance are a smart choice for new drivers, who are at a higher risk of accidents due to their lack of experience.
