The Florida defensive driving course for seniors is a class that drivers aged 55 and over can take voluntarily in order to receive an insurance discount – often between 3% and 10%. Insurance companies are legally required to provide a discount to customers who complete the Florida mature defensive driving course for seniors, although insurers may choose the specific discount amount themselves. The discount will be applied every year for three years as long as the driver is not cited for an at-fault accident or a moving violation.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles lists 14 approved “mature driver courses” on its website. The courses usually take six hours to complete and cost between $10 and $30. Most approved courses can be taken online, but there are in-person options for those who prefer a classroom setting.
It’s important to note that the defensive driving course for seniors is different from Florida’s Basic Driver Improvement (BDI) course. Eligible Florida drivers who are cited can elect to take the BDI course within 30 days of the citation in order to avoid points on their license. For serious convictions, including reckless driving, the course is mandatory. Insurance companies are not required to provide a discount to anyone who takes a driving course as a result of a citation.
Even though Florida law does not require a defensive driving course insurance discount for drivers under age 55, younger drivers can always check with their insurance company, as some insurers might provide a discount anyway. Regardless, a defensive driving course may prove worthwhile in the long run by preventing accidents and tickets, which cause costly premium increases.
