A DUI can stay on your record anywhere from 5 years to the rest of your life, depending on the laws of your state. A DUI will increase your insurance by an average of 144% according to Wallethub data, but the good news is that the amount of time a DUI stays on your record is not necessarily the same as the amount of time it will affect your insurance.
Effects of DUIs in popular states:
State | Years on Record | Average Insurance Increase |
California | 10 years | 144% |
Texas | Indefinitely | 57% |
Florida | 75 years | 56% |
New York | 15 years | 85% |
Michigan | Indefinitely | 186% |
Insurance companies will generally only look back for 3-5 years, so a DUI will only affect your insurance rates for a few years. Some states, like Virginia and Washington, have a mandated car insurance look back period. For instance, even though a DUI will stay on your record in Virginia for 10 years, state law only allows insurance companies a look back period of 3 years.
