To fulfill California SR-22 requirements, drivers must carry at least the state’s minimum liability car insurance coverage: bodily injury insurance of at least $15,000 per person and $30,000 per accident, plus $5,000 of coverage for property damage.
California law requires these types of liability insurance coverage, at a minimum, for drivers to be legal on the road. But California drivers who must file an SR-22 with the state and get high-risk auto insurance are not required to obtain more coverage than other drivers in the state. That’s true even for drivers with multiple violations. Car insurance does cost more when you are classified as high-risk, however, especially if you have numerous infractions on your driving record.
Minimum SR-22 Insurance Requirements in California:
- Bodily injury liability coverage per person: $15,000
- Bodily injust liability coverage per accident: $30,000
- Property damage liability coverage per accident: $5,000
Even though you can meet the legal requirements with minimum insurance, you might want to opt for higher coverage levels. The more insurance you buy, the more protection you have for your finances and property.
Consider supplemental policy options such as collision coverage or comprehensive coverage, too. Collision coverage pays for damage to your car from a collision with other cars, wildlife, trees, or other objects. Comprehensive coverage handles any other damage to your car, such as from theft, vandalization, or inclement weather.
