To get an OnStar insurance discount, share your OnStar data with Progressive’s or State Farm’s usage-based insurance system, or visit the OnStar website to see which companies offer an OnStar discount in your state. OnStar discounts are divided into three categories: good driver discounts, low mileage discounts, and discounts just for having OnStar.
Good Driver Discounts via OnStar
Progressive offers discounts to customers who agree to share their OnStar data with Progressive’s Snapshot program.
Snapshot is a usage-based insurance program, meaning that it adjusts your car insurance rates based on your driving habits. Drivers who provide Snapshot with their OnStar information could receive discounts depending on their driving, although Progressive does not specify an exact amount.
Low Mileage Discounts
OnStar also partners with State Farm and National General to monitor mileage, which can lead to savings.
For instance, State Farm customers in most states can receive discounts through the Drive Safe & Save with OnStar program, which allows drivers to verify their mileage via OnStar. Drivers can then save on each six-month policy if OnStar proves that they qualify for State Farm’s low mileage discount. This arrangement is not available in New York.
Similarly, National General offers low mileage discounts for odometer readings measured by OnStar. Customers must drive less than 15,000 miles annually to qualify, and can save up to 54%.
OnStar Member Discounts
In many states, insurers like Liberty Mutual and National General offer a flat discount of around 10% simply for being an OnStar member. Even home insurance policies can sometimes be discounted up to 10% with OnStar if you have multiple types of insurance through the same company. When in doubt, ask your insurance company if they offer an OnStar discount, or check your account on the company’s website or app to see if the discount has been applied to your policy.
OnStar is available for almost any car these days, since the company offers specially equipped mirrors, in addition to the traditional service provided by General Motors cars. Either way, prospective customers need to purchase a subscription to activate OnStar. If you’re considering purchasing an OnStar mirror or subscription, check to see what discounts you will be eligible for based on your insurer and state. Regardless, it’s always worth taking the time to compare quotes and read our discounts guide to ensure that you’re getting the best possible price.
