You can get a free FICO score from Discover by going to the website and signing up for a free Discover Scorecard account. Discover offers free FICO scores using the FICO Score 8 credit-score model and credit reports from TransUnion.

Anyone can enroll in the Discover Scorecard program. You don’t need to have a Discover credit card or another Discover account to be eligible. Once you have created your account, you can see updates to your score on a monthly basis.

If you want more frequent updates and more than just a free credit score, you can create a free WalletHub account. You’ll get daily updates to your VantageScore credit score and TransUnion credit report, along with free credit monitoring and personalized credit-improvement tips. As long as you’re checking your credit score regularly, it does not matter which scoring model you use.

What's the minimum credit score needed for Discover cards?

A 700+ credit score is needed to get most Discover credit cards, but there’s no minimum credit score needed for a few Discover cards. You can get the Discover it® Secured Credit Card with a bad credit score (below 640). And college students don’t need a credit score, or any credit experience, to get one of Discover’s two student credit cards. Here’s the minimum credit score needed for each Discover card:

Discover it Secured Credit Card: No minimum score, applicants with bad credit are eligible for approval (below 640).

Discover it® Student Cash Back: Available to applicants with limited credit (less than 3 years of credit history).

Discover it® Student chrome: Available to applicants with limited credit (less than 3 years of credit history).

Discover it Cash Back: Good credit (700+) required.

NHL® Discover it®: Good credit (700+) required.

Discover it® chrome: Good credit (700+) required.

Discover it Miles: Good credit (700+) required.

There aren’t any Discover cards that flat-out require excellent credit, currently. But we recommend a score of at least 700, which is toward the top of the good credit range, for the cards that require 700 credit for approval.

With that being said, it’s not just your credit score you should worry about. For example, Discover will consider other factors, such as how your income compares to your debt, along with your employment status, whether you own or rent your home, how many loans and lines of credit you already have open, and more.

Sallie Mae: If you have a private student loan through Sallie Mae, you can view your FICO score for free through your online account.

USAA: USAA members can check their FICO scores through their online accounts.

Wells Fargo: Wells Fargo credit card accountholders can check their FICO scores for free with monthly updates.

When looking for a free credit score, remember to pay attention to the source you use. Choose a site that offers frequent updates and provides information on how your score is calculated. As long as it’s from a reputable source, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re checking a FICO score or a VantageScore.
