Credit card companies, and the debt collection agencies that often assume old debt, can and will sue you for amounts owed. In fact, they aren’t legally allowed to threaten a lawsuit if they do not plan to go through with it.

Sure. If they feel it's worth it because you owe a lot and they think they have a good chance of getting some. It doesn't mean they would win, just that they've weighed the odds and decided it was worthwhile.
If you've declared bankruptcy, then something similar might be happening, but you have other issues, so you would need to prioritize there as well.
Ten years from now, you'll laugh about this. I hope.
