I checked with our Insurance Agency folks - most of the factors that affect your policy cost for home insurance relate to fixed items such as square footage, proximity to a fire department, whether you have a fireplace, pool, spa or trampoline. You may be able to get slight discounts for having smoke detectors but you're best best on saving around the house is likely linked to energy usage. There are many rebates available for upgrading appliances, heating and cooling systems, lighting and even wifi or programmable thermostats. Between the rebates and cost savings, many of these items will pay for themselves within a few years and then start generating true 'in your pocket' savings. Visit the websites of your electic and gas company for more details on these rebates.
