Regulations do not permit an adviser to provide you with investment performance unless it's been independently audited and the investment firm has approved it from a compliance standpoint. Most advisers work with multiple clients, each with their own account rather than a single, pooled investment vehicle (i.e. mutual fund or hedge fund). It's expected that a single pooled investment vehicle will have an audited track record, but it's rare that an adviser will have an audited track record of a composite of all the different accounts s/he manages (plus it's expensive). So if you have a very large portfolio and all you're seeking is investment management services, you probably should choose only an adviser who can legally provide you with performance information. Otherwise, it's probably somewhat unrealistic to expect it. Finally, while investment often comprises the lion's share of one's financial picture, it's only one of several important pieces to the financial puzzle. A good financial planner/adviser will be able to help you with investment, retirement planning, tax strategies, general estate matters, risk management through insurance, and cash flow and debt management. For most folks, it's important that they not neglect these other important financial areas. I hope that helps.
