That will be determined by the trading policy agreed to by the company holding the assets and your employer. It is not unusual for that stock to be "restricted" in that you cannot sell it for a year or two. The monitoring is simply knowing where your company is sending the shares as they have to be held by a brokerage firm and that firm must send you at least an annual statement.
