Preferred boarding is a feature that enables you to board an airplane earlier. To check if you have this feature, just look for "PriorityAccess" on your boarding pass.

For American Airlines, preferred boarding means group 5 (Preferred). You have to get the Citi Executive card to get group 4 (Priority). Anything higher than 4 requires Elite Status, First Class, or Concierge level.

In short, it means you’ll have have priority when boarding, so you’ll get on the plane faster.
