The answer to this question is yes but they have to be deducted on the schedule for itemized deductions. In addition there's a technical catch which is as follows. If the individual is under the age of 65, then medical expenses are only deductible to the extent they exceed 10% of adjusted gross income. For those over the age 65 there is a similar limitation and you can only deduct those expenses over 7.5% of adjusted gross income. So gothe bottom line on the first page of the 1040, otherwise known as adjusted gross income and if it were $40,000, an individual or family under the age 65 would have to have more than $4,000 of medical expenses and only that portion in excess of $4,000 is actually deductible.
