Union dues are deductible, but there are two hurdles for the deduction to be of benefit:
You have to itemize deductions on Schedule A, which means the total of your itemized deductions will need to be larger than your standard deduction.
If you itemize deductions on Schedule A, list union dues on line 21 in the Job Expenses and Miscellaneous Deductions section. But you'll only be able to deduct the expenses of that section (including union dues) that exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income.
For example, say that your adjusted gross income is $70,000. If the total of your eligible Job Expenses and Miscellaneous Deductions is not more than $1,400 (2%), then your union dues deduction is not going to help you.
