I've had my checking account with Wells Fargo ever since they enveloped Wachovia, and my experience has been mixed. Generally, I enjoy the bill pay option, ATM availability in my area, and relatively low fees compared to the other big banks. I have also had a few issues with them. In the most recent issue, I noticed an unauthorized $150 had been removed from my account at the end of the month, which overdrew me (for the first time), and it had overdraft fees assigned. When I called them, they said I'd taken the money out with a deposit slip: an item I haven't used in years. When I stated it was an invalid charge that needed to be investigated, while they did begin to look into it, the customer service was snippy, and despite it being my first overdraft, acted like she was doing me a favor by returning half the overdraft fee, which she stated "they wouldn't normally do". When I followed up later, it turned out that they had accidentally switched the number from another customer's bank account, and at that point, apologized and corrected the remainder of the fee, but it was not great treatment. I've also had issues with them cancelling a card due to a potential third party compromise, but neglected to inform me that my card wouldn't work. I would still rate them a lot higher than Bank of America, but if you don't need wide ATM availability, I would still recommend going with any credit union checking account before Wells Fargo.
