I visited my local BofA 'Financial Center' to switch from an "Advantage Tiered Interest Checking" Acct (2 checking accts + 1 savings acct) to a "Core Checking" acct. They rolled the balances from the savings acct and the 2nd checking acct into the remaining checking acct, closed the two for me, and then reassigned the remaining checking acct to "Core Checking" WITHOUT changing the account number. No change in passwords; Billpay remained intact, overdraft link remained in place. They were friendly and took care of the changeover within 20 minutes.

Bank of America's policy is to not cash checks unless funds are available in the account. This can be easily overridden and your check will be cashed without a problem. However, if your account has a history of being overdrawn, or there are problems with checks you have cashed in the past, they will place a hold on your account which will not allow checks to be cashed against your account.
According to the bank’s overdraft policy, if you authorized an overdraft, you will be able to withdraw emergency cash at a Bank of America ATM, even if you have no funds in your account.
