Due to financial difficulties in the past couple of years, that everyone has been having, I could not make a payment to my AMEX credit card. I have made on time payments for seven years. I had contacted customer service about the issue. I was told to wait until I could pay it, and contact them again once I have to have it waived. When I went to contact customer service once again, I was told I was declined. Don't you love being told something by one employee, just to be told another thing by another? The economy is getting bad, and they can't help out long time customers all of a sudden? Capital One, Discover, and Target were more understanding and waived my late fees. There is nothing specifically special about AMEX in the end. Don't waste your time with AMEX.

This is an OK card overall but in 2022 there are lot of similar, better cards I'd take over this one. The real reason I believe most people (including myself) get this card is because it is effectively the starter card for building a relationship with Amex. Two good reasons to do that. One being Amex will only ever do a hard credit pull on you once (on your first approved card with them), so getting another card with Amex is a lot less risky to your credit than with other issuers. This is kinda nice for if you're going for something like a Gold/Platinum setup in the future. The other is that being in Amex earns you a LOT of exclusive offers, most of which you will probably never use even if you're a turbo-shopaholic. But these include many of the bigger shopping retailers like Adidas and Uniqlo.
If the above is important to you, then the BCE is a decent choice. But the perks themselves like the 3% back on groceries also exist on similar cards like the Chase Freedom Flex and Capital One SavorOne, with more competitive benefits and no minimum rewards redemption (compared with the BCE where annoyingly, you need to have at least $25 in cashback rewards to redeem it). I've since upgraded to the BC Preferred since it has a 6% groceries cashback, but it does carry the caveat of a $95 annual fee.

Only credit card that charges me an annual fee of $250. Didn’t receive a bill and they reported a missed payment. I paid and left.

They're really trying to pan these travel and hotel cards off here in the Covid era. With all the travel bans, chancy airline service, vax mandates, sickness, jobs loss, and general uncertainty. It says my chances are excellent if I were to apply but the biggest thing is once they check they're not going to give me any credit. If you get approved the next step, done at activation, is an IRS 4506 release of tax records. This is done by Equifax. I guess if you don't release your tax records to Equifax on behalf of Amex you can lose your other cards.

I've never had to release tax records or any paperwork. Not sure why they are asking that other than they might be questioning your stated income? I have 4 AMEX cards and they never asked for any documents.

Dear @LisaInCali, Agree! I’ve never been asked to release tax records (current or otherwise) either. I do not know anyone who has, nor can I understand why a credit card company would want or need this information. If I was to be asked, I would promptly refuse. I can think of no compelling reason why a credit card company would need this very personal information. An applicant is either creditworthy or isn’t. These companies dig far enough into a potential cardholder’s personal finances. Perusing tax information is just wrong on so many levels.

A great card for everyday use. Excellent benefits, good intro rewards. This card is my go to card for purchases like gas and groceries which offer cash back rewards. I have both the Citi Double cash and 2 Discover cards, this is my main card for every day use.

Amex has become my favorite because of their customer centric approach. 1. They approved my credit card based on my credit relationship in home country. 2. I got the highest limit than any other bank cards I had in the first year. They kept increasing my limit significantly every six month, obviously the repayment and US credit history remained same for all card providers. 3. The always come up with great promotions while supporting small shops and local businesses. 4. The reward rate and redemption process is smooth and simple.

insurance benefit is a rip off. Had a 180 dollar electronic purchase get busted on the way home and I turned in a claim. They approved the claim and gave me a $6.66 credit, what a joke. I have been with them for eight years and this is my first claim which will be making me look for a new card.
