Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card Review Summary
The Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card is a good airline credit card for people with good credit, and it’s especially worthwhile for those planning a trip in the next year or so to a destination Delta services. The Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card is best the first year because of its initial bonus offer and $0 intro annual fee the first year.
The card has solid ongoing perks, too, including 1 - 2 miles per $1 spent on purchases and at least one free checked bag whenever you fly Delta. But an annual fee of $99 applies from the second year on, so you’ll need to be a frequent flyer to get your money’s worth. You should also make sure to pay your bill in full each month, as the Gold Delta SkyMiles Amex does not have a low APR.

Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card Highlights
70,000-mile initial bonus offer
The Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card offers new cardholders 70,000 miles after spending $2,000 in the first 6 months. The bonus is worth roughly $903 in Delta airfare, according to WalletHub calculations. The bonus miles will be credited to your account within 8-12 weeks after you meet the spending requirement.
For comparison, the average initial bonus among new credit card offers is worth around $230.
2 miles / $1 spent in bonus categories
This card rewards users with 2 miles per $1 spent directly with Delta. You also get 2 miles / $1 spent at restaurants worldwide, including takeout and delivery in the U.S. Purchases from U.S. supermarkets get that same bonus rewards rate, too.
To put things in dollar terms, you will earn roughly 2.58% back on purchases in the card’s bonus categories. That’s over twice as much as the average rewards card would give you.
1-9 free checked bags
You get one free checked bag each time you fly with Delta. In addition, as many as eight travel companions can each get one free checked bag, but you need to pay for all the tickets with your Delta Gold Card.
20% back on in-flight purchases
You’ll get a statement credit for 20% of the amount of any food, drinks or audio headsets you buy while flying with Delta.
$0 introductory fee the first year
Not having to pay the Gold Delta Amex Card’s standard annual fee the first year saves you $99. That’s almost like a second initial bonus.
No foreign transaction fees
If you travel abroad, or even make online purchases from international merchants, most credit cards will tack on a surcharge of 3%. That’s not the case with the Gold Delta SkyMiles Amex, though.
Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card Lowlights
$99 annual fee starting year two
The Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card has an annual fee of $99 from the second year onward. When it’s in effect, the Gold Delta Amex is nearly five-times more expensive than the average credit card offer. As a result, you’ll need to consider whether you will earn enough in rewards to not only cover the cost, but also avoid missing out on more savings from other cards.
20.49% - 29.49% (V) APR
New cardholders are assigned an interest rate that could be anywhere from 20.49% to 29.49% (V), depending on their overall creditworthiness. But neither end of the range is very good, considering the competition.
The average APR among credit card offers for people with good credit, which you need to get the Gold Delta SkyMiles Card, is 21.2%. Furthermore, the low end of the Gold Delta Card’s range does not compare too favorably with the market average for people with excellent credit (15.16%).
Long story short, you should pay your bill in full every month if you decide to apply for this card. Otherwise, interest charges will quickly erode your savings from rewards.
Other Things to Consider About the Gold Delta SkyMiles Credit Card
1 mile / $1 spent on most types of purchases
Purchases that do not qualify for the Gold Delta SkyMiles Card’s bonus rewards rate will get you just 1 mile / $1 spent, which is about average for a rewards card. As a result, you can maximize your savings by using the Gold Delta SkyMiles Card only for purchases from Delta, restaurants and U.S. supermarkets, and getting another rewards card for your other spending.
Good credit or better required
The Gold Delta SkyMiles credit score requirement is 700+, as you need at least Good credit for approval. You can check your credit score for free on WalletHub before applying.
