America witnessed the start of a revolution in the credit card industry when Discover card was unveiled nationally during the 1986 Super Bowl. A Dawn of Discover commercial featured a rising sun, uplifting images of traditional American life and the simple message: Very few things cost them nothing to get and pay them back every day. But now the Discover card does. Discover made it known that innovation and change were coming to the credit card industry: Change that focused on features and services that consumers wanted, but couldn't find in other credit cards. At the time, annual fees were common and cash rewards were unheard of. Discover set out to change that as a pioneer in offering cash rewards and no annual fee. Today, Discover is a leading credit card issuer and electronic payment services company with one of the most recognized brands in U.S. financial services. The company operates the Discover card, America's cash rewards pioneer. They provide banking and credit products that help people achieve their goals–from establishing good credit, to paying for a college education to consolidating debt. In payments, their networks connect banks, cardmembers and merchants around the world with innovative commerce solutions.
As of 2018 net income is at $669 Million, diluted, return on equity of 25%, Total loan growth of 9% led by a 10% increase in credit card loans, revenue growth of 8%. Payment Services continues to drive strong network volume growth (up 14%). Returned $656 Million of capital through dividends and share repurchases and received a non-objection from the Federal Reserve for 2018-2019 capital plan.

says its for people to help rebuilding credit after bankruptcy, denies people with bankruptcy. why is this card even an option ? im not sure what else to say, just rambling on right now, so I can fulfill the 200 characters needed to submit a review, for a complete waist of my time.
In March 2018 I applied for a discover it secured credit card with a $200 security deposit. Around 6 months later, because of my perfect payment history, Discover increased my credit limit from $200 to $1800 and returned my security deposit. I made every payment on time and paid the balance in full every month except for one in February 2019 because I changed employers to help with hurricane relief in Florida. Unfortunately I was not made aware that I would have to wait a month for my first paycheck, so I unfortunately missed one payment. However, I quickly got caught up and continued to pay my balances in full every month. Despite having an almost perfect relationship with discover, they took it upon themselves without notifying me to lower my credit limit from $1800 to $500 in August of 2019 which in turn harmed my credit score. What's even more bizarre is the fact that I used my card much less tgan normal the month prior, which would denote an even lower risk to Discover. When I called to ask why my limit was lowered, the only answer I could get was that it may be due to something being negative on my credit report. Question: WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH MY ALMOST PERFECT RELATIONSHIP WITH DISCOVER? I immediately cancelled the card and am seeking legal recourse because Discover had no concrete reason with evidence to interrupt my credit line and harm my ability to get credit.
Discover was great - until they closed my account. I fell behind on payments after losing my job and was able to set up a year-long payment agreement, which, at the time was great. They told me once I completed my plan, my account would be in good standing and unfrozen. Fast forward to a year later, I completed the plan and called to find out why my account was not yet unfrozen. They told me my account would be randomly reviewed at some point and then the decision would be made to unfreeze my account. Months later, without my knowledge, they closed my account. I am VERY unhappy with the way I have been treated as a Discover customer.
I applied for this card and was pleasantly surprised with an approval with a $2000 cl. After receiving the card, I completed a balance transfer and I am very pleased with the process. I’ve called a number of times with questions and their customer service is impeccable!!!! Considering my first language is English it is very refreshing to know that they have a 100% American based CS department. After being approved, I saw the wonderful benefits in banking with them as well. Their debit card with the checking account has a cash back benefit like a credit card and the savings account has like a 2.10 APY. This company is great!!!!!!!!!
Love this card! I have a couple of other cards, and considered some of the competitors when looking for a cash back card, but so glad I chose Discover! There was a typo on the card when I received it (not sure if that my was my mistake or Discover’s) but the important thing is I made one call to a US based account Manager who was awesome! She was very polite and took care of the problem in about 3 minutes. That’s the way customer service should be. My only regret is not getting this card sooner!
I applied and received this card in March 2019 easy process. It's now June 2019 3rd statement in and ai have had no issues with this card! Love the cash back. My fico score is now at 658 with TransUnion when I first opened it was 592. It has only gone up! I pay off balance before the closing date so it can show 0% utilization on my credit report. I have never carried a balance so the due date is always $0 owed. Call and ask when the statement Closing date is and always make sure it is $0 balance on that date. I'm looking forward to right after my7 month statement, crossing my fingers that I get an increase in my credit limit like others $2000 to $2500. I also noticed that people who added more money on there account to have a bigger limit did not get the increase until after 13 months instead of 7th billing cycle if at all. graduation automatically seems to happen later. I'm keeping mine at $200 it's fine with me!!!
Discover claims they notified me that they were closing my card because I didn't use it enough. They didn't. They also didn't send me any kind of electronic communication stating that they would be closing my account. By doing so, they caused a SEVERE drop in my credit score. I have had this card for YEARS and I have never had this issue. It is a backup emergency card that I use WHEN NEEDED. Apparently, Discover isn't interested in my business since I'm not in credit card debt and I know how to pay my balances in full. They're not making any money off me so they don't want me to have an account with them. PRETTY CONVENIENT! Oh wait, no... not convenient at all. What good is a card if it can't be used in an emergency? STICK WITH YOUR LOCAL CREDIT UNION AND DON'T BOTHER DOING BUSINESS WITH THIS FRAUDULENT COMPANY.
I'm guessing because of my payment history, they took a chance on me. 4th new card in a year, will definitely use this to keep the scores climbing. Approved with a 659 trans 652 FICO. Thanks for the opportunity! ?
WORST customer service I have ever dealt with! I would go with a different credit card company ? They do not work with customer's & are not flexible at all!!! They make errors & do not correct them. I am seriously livid over my last experience with them.
I cant say enough good things about Discover. I'm working on getting a 2nd CASH BACK card. I held the secured card for 7 months, exactly when the 7th statement closed I got my deposit back. Initially I put 300, then I added 700 later. So I got the 1K back and they doubled my limit
I’ve had this card for little over a year. I think it’s a great card it’s no annual fee $0, 2% cash back on gas stations & restaurants, plus reward matching the first year. Other unsecured cards I have doesn’t have these benefits. As with anything I believe it’s important to read the fine print to try and avoid being blindsided. But this company doesn’t really have hidden fees so all the negative reviews are from people not doing their due diligence. Are there drawbacks? Of course! 1 being they report as a secured card but meh what can you do. 2 they do take 1-3 days to post your online or app payment so if you aren’t careful with your checking account you could get a returned payment. This has never happened to me but my younger irresponsible self probably would have. 3 I have had to call them once because they held my account after making my FIRST large payment but no issues since. I now avoid all this my utilizing my banks online bill pay discover gets it electronically same day boom crisis avoided. Might I add some of these reviews complaining about payment posting times, trying to pay with pay/ prepaid cards is stupid. In addition to getting a credit card you need to also get a reputable bank account and get all your financial aspects in order. The key to getting ahead is learning how these companies work and play the game. They won’t tell you how to play better than them because they bank on us not figuring them out. My last thing is I still haven’t been graduated! Am I bummed yes I’ve paid on time in full every month since obtaining this card. My score had improved however I think it’s to do with my student loans not decreasing much and me having to get a new car loan. I believe that’s something people need to consider as well is not just about the score and your payment history it’s the FULL picture. Debt has to be reduced over all. So for now I’m fine the benefits outweigh being unsecured to me...for now. Hope this helps someone.
Got denied, I plan on calling them to find out why. I have little debt and my credit score is 595. I Do have a bankruptcy that is 6 yrs old and it was discharged in 2013. I thought I was good based off all the reviews but I guess not. I have only 1 credit card with $240 limit that I pay on time. Also have 2 school loans 6k and my car is about to be paid off never late balance is under 2k 52 on time payments. Don’t know where I went wrong with this card. I’m hopeful when I call them l, they reconsider. Pray for me guys lol
The worst credit card company! worst customer service. They brag about it being in the US but i would rather have someone in China or India who cares. you will be treated like dirt. They will never have managers on duty. The reps will tell you that will get a call back but that will never happen
I respect honesty and responsibility. When this bank makes a mistake, they will distort facts and cover it up. I will never use Discover again. They will distort facts and try to put the blame on a customer. I was a customer with them for over 30 years and now I regret every second of it
I got this card with a score in the low 600s. I was so happy to be given another shot after working on my credit score for over a year and a half. I felt super special when the card came in the mail- it was so much extra (came in a super personalized box and it was obvious it wasn’t a crappy capital one card). The customer service and easy-to-navigate website make it an even better card to have. The cashback rewards are nice, too, and they can be applied to your bill, or even linked to be used in your Amazon account.
I got the Credit Karma app at the suggestion of my fiance, so I'd know where my credit numbers stand (I was one who thought it better not to know such horrors) and I am glad I sucked it up and looked. My credit was poo. I was in the mid 500's and if I wanted to own a home, get a decent interest rate for a car, I had to get my scores up and clean up my credit. I applied for two cards one being Discover It Secured Card and set my initial limit at $1000. I read some reviews and one suggested bumping it up as much as you can so, I put another $1000 on it and made my purchases and made sure I payed my card (and my other cards/loans) on time. I set up calendar reminders on my phone to insure that I wouldn't forget. Its now April 2019 and to my surprise I got a letter from Discover graduating my card to unsecured and a check for my deposit. They review not only how you use their card but your history across all of your cards, loans, etc to determine if your're a good candidate to graduate your card. I love my card and it is and will always be my go to card! Thanks Discover for allowing me to get my credit back on track!
Awful service. Discover does not honor written nor verbal promises. Expect to experience delays, lack of professionalism, unethical behavior by representatives. One representative contradicts the next resulting in wasting of time and inability to promptly accomplish transactions. They cost us money by not performing as stated they would.Stay clear of this bank.
Just ridiculous! Discover It Secured card is named one of the top secured cards to get after Chapter 7 bankruptcy. I have a 650 credit score post bankruptcy. I am an authorized user on one of my husband's credit card & have 1 student loan. I also have a house but it was included but we continue to pay on time & will keep it. I was approved for a new car loan with no problems! I was approved for another secured card no questions asked. I was prequalified which is the only reason I applied yet I was still denied. I was sent a letter saying I was denied due to bankruptcy. I called customer service & they stated becuase of bankruptcy & other things on my credit? There's nithing bad on my credit. I always paid on time & have a good credit history. This company is total garbabe & huge liars. I won't apply with them,in the future for anything. They don't deserve good people trying to get their credit back on track as customers...
I tried to add an external account to make a transfer, and they locked me out of my account. Then, when I tried to call them to unlock my account, they said they were doing maintenance on their website and to call them back at 6 AM. Very frustrating. All I did was enter the information for my bank to make an external transfer, and on the next page, it said my account was locked.
Declined wit score in the early 600s dont know why said “I’ll get a letter in the mail within 7-10 business days. Highly disappointed. Been reading all the reviews seen ppl get approved wit lower scores, very interested in why I was declined. Have 4 open accounts never late, 2 years is the oldest and 3 months is the newest.
GAME-CHANGER WITH FAST RESULTS!! I messed up my credit a few years ago to chase after love. After that failed miserably, I lost my job and decided I'd never allow myself to get that low again. Beginning anew with a part-time job, I got this secured Discover It. card with the minimum deposit in 8/2018. I used it often for gas or groceries, making sure that I never let my balance revolve at more than 30% of my tiny $200 limit. Basically, I followed my pay schedule and paid on my card every 2 weeks. I'll tell you, in March, 2019, my mindful behavior really paid off, and I was surprised with a letter, returning my deposit back to me and a very significant credit limit increase. After only 6 mos, I have grown my financial confidence back and feel very proud of my conscious payment habits! I know each of us is unique, but I can testify that Discover is willing to reward those with a good track record. It feels wonderful to have my deposit back, to have a much higher credit limit, and I'm watching this card help my FICO score improve!!
Applied for and received my Discover It Secured in August 2018, along with another secured card. I started out making multiple payments a month but now just make sure the balance is at zero before every statement and leave it at $0 a few days before and after payment would be due (my due date is the 1st, had it at $0, used it on the 3rd for new cycle and it showed a balance when they reported to bureaus). The app is very convenient and easy to use, the rewards add up (free $21 so far), and my credit scores through CK went from lower 500s to lower 700s. At the 8th month now I just got an email they're returning my deposit and giving me a $2500 credit line. It's a fantastic way to build credit- responsibly. Couldn't be happier, unless I suppose they gave 10% cash back =D ave
I was a Discover card holder for over 5 years. I never had problems with them until recently when my card was stolen. I reported it and my case turned into an investigation that has been on going for 7 months now. Discover is trying to tell me that I’m liable for the transactions totaling to more then $4,000.00. Its been an ongoing battle to have someone believe me when I say I didn’t stay in all those states where expensive hotel purchases were made. I’ll learned that discover has no compassion for its customers and has no respect for their loyalty. I have closed my card and will never be going back. -Camila Gaskey
I am a non-traditional student (in my 30s). I had no credit score when I checked last year due to lack of activity. I was approved for a standard $500 limit visa through my bank 7 months ago and also began a credit building installment loan with the bank that I share with my husband. I've had 100% on time payments and low credit utilization. My score is now 665. I have one old collection account for $124 from a couple years ago that I haven't had removed yet. Our gross income is 3 1/2 times more than our housing. Discover declined my approval for the Student card. Reason-Collection. I thought this would be a done deal for me based on all the reviews that list the requirements for the card. Just FYI for anyone like me that is scouring these sites for info prior to applying.
Just Recieved My Card in the Mail Today, I applied on the 28th of January, so i would say thats quik. I have no credit Score or History so im happy to have this card, i also just got a Capital One Secured last Month They actually just reported but still No score yet.. takes time
Just activated my card today! I was nervous about applying as I already have capital one, and credit one card. I got those cards before working on my credit, so the limits are very low. Discover pulled my Experian report (734 FICO) and I was approved for 10k! I’m over the moon. I am a business owner, so I will be inquiring about their business card as well!
Would rate 0 stars, if possible. Poor customer service (if you can call it that), give you a huge credit line after initial secured limit, let you run balance up, then unexpectedly cancel your account for no obvious reason right after you make a big payment. Liars and thieves. Stay away from Discover!
Just applied at the start of the year. I got the card one week later :) So far the card is great and it's been very helpful when I need it. The website could use some work. I got accepted for $500 line of credit and hoping to get that increase soon.
I obtained the card to help increase my credit score. The application process was easy. I was approved instantly and received my card in less than 2 weeks. I made 2 purchases with the intent to pay the full balance when I received my statement. By the time I received my first statement, Discover had already reported my balance to Equifax which dropped my credit score down 5 points because my balance was more than 10% of my credit limit. I immediately paid the full balance and going forward will only use the card for a small purchase (like gas) and pay the balance immediately.
Wallet Hub said chances were good but I got denied! I have a 684 credit score on TU and EX and wallet hub said my chances were good but if you look at the breakdown on credit rating... 684 comes in at fair and this card states you need good to excellent credit. Thanks Wallet Hub for sitting me up for a fruitless hard inquiry!
Right now the bonus category is Grocery stores. However the fine prob excludes any store considered a super center or department store. So you can ugly get it at standalone grocery stores like Kroger, Albertsons, and such. This completely destroys the bonus considering these stores are typically 10-30% more expensive. I'm not going to spend 10-30% more just to get 5% cash back. Whoever made this decision is an idiot and should be fired.
I chose to use Discover it Secured to start credit for a new business. After making a $2500 security deposit and providing all requested verification my account was closed due to business reasons which could not be explained. After being on the phone for over an hour, I was told it would take the equivalent of two weeks to receive my deposit back by way of check. Horrible business and customer service.
simply the worst credit card, they offer 0% interest to transfer balance but if you use the card then you have to pay interest... i don't get it. what is the deal, that is the only credit card whit that offer
To many goodies for Secured Card. Looks more like regular reward one for people with good credit. They need to let the low fico know the good deal they can get. I have a visa and a mastercard. Never so the the discover deal
Great card.. Has the best customer service I have ever dealt with.. The 0% apr for the first year is great too... They gave me a $1200 limit when Capital One would only give me $400 limit. Then after 3 months of paying card off completely each month, they have already increased limit to $1,400 without having to request a higher limit.
I’ve had this card going on 3 months now and so far I’m very pleased with it. I was approved with scores in the mid 500s. Two weeks after receiving it appeared on all three of my credit reports and boosted my score 34 points.
I am a student and Discover won't consider me for a card because they can't verify my social security number? It must mean they actually do check your credit because I have none but I do file taxes. Go figure.
If I could give a 0, I would. This card and reviews are BOGUS. Do not waste your time with the hard inquiry. How do you not get approved for a secured card? Mind you, I have to send them a deposit. THIS CARD MAKES NO SENSE. I read the reviews, my score is a 678, and I have 3 unsecured cards with $3500 or more on each with no late fees. I’m rebuilding my credit, so if you’re like me, apply for a Capital One card. SAVE YOURSELF SOME TIME AND DON’T APPLY. GO TO CAPITAL ONE OR EVEN OLLO!!!!!!!!
