Fifth Third Bank Review Highlights

Unhappy with charges for a checking acct. Monitoring the mobile app can appear as incorrect “available funds” then secretly charge you service fees and overdraft fees because you believed what they claimed was avbl to use. I’m absolutely sick to death of this bank, I’m wasting more money than saving. This bank has year after year financially drained me. I NEVER RECOMMEND this bank!

When you are on autobill and make an early manual payment, they still take the statement amount out of your account instead of the reduced amount. You have to jump to hoops and loops to get your money back.
I also never received the promised welcome bonus.
Stay away...

Avoid at any cost!
Use any credit union, dealer financing, etc. Anything other than 53rd.
I made the terrible error of forgetting to put postage on my letter to send a payment for my car loan. I have gotten multiple calls a day every day, 3 times on Sunday. I have a line of credit and have now sent payment for the total amount I owe. This was done this Friday after talking to them and I
am still getting calls over the weekend. There is nothing I can do to make this faster! I sent payment for my total due (plus $10 since they could not give me the total amount due postdated for Monday). I still get calls. 3 times today. I will never, ever work with them again.… read more

Horrible costomer service. I hope they treat everyone this bad because I hope its not because Im a black man. closed my account today. It was just a check cashing account but they rarely allow me to cash a check after 2 and a half years of certigy denying my checks and wasting my time. Find people who dont appear to be racist like the 53s I seem to always walk into. Never have any
peoblems cashing checks at any other bank except the bank that I have a account with. Pitiful… read more

Only hit one star because I can't submit without it. This is the worst bank in the history of banks! Do yourself a favor and find another bank. They had six of our accounts for personal and business. We had fraud on one of our accounts and were told if they didn't get the money back, we wouldn't either. That was $3,000 they said we might never recoup. I figured out what their email protocol
was and emailed everybody on the board. I also reported them to every government agency I could. I had my money back in two hours on a Saturday. Soooo, we took our money elsewhere immediately. BUT, we kept the credit cards. I have paid the bill every month on time. This month I got the bill and there was a late charge of $27. The payment was made by my bank and showed delivery on the due date. This was an electronic transfer from Chase. Called up fifth third and they told me they now recognize a 4 day clearing period even for electronic transfers! What? Never received any kind of notice for this policy. They absolutely suck! As soon as I pay this card off, they're history! I hate these guys and don't understand HOW they stay in business. Also, I pay four to five times the minimum payment.… read more

I have a credit card account with Fifth Third and when I was using the account my biggest gripes were with billpay not allowing autopayments from outside accounts and the inability to get e-bills sent directly to my other billpay system, but I recently had an incident that took them from a 1 to a hard zero in my opinion. So they recently send me checks for credit transfers or whatever I wanted to use
them for according to the paper. So I was like great I will use these to pay off another credit card I have. The paperwork said I could use the checks or go online and transfer using the code for the offer. I thought easy enough so i went into my account and found the offer and put in my information and clicked ok, a few seconds later it came back declined. I thought maybe I put in the wrong card information, tried again, denied again. Ok I will just use the check, filled out and scanned to my other bank. The next day they call me about fraudulent activity on my account and ask me to call back and verify the information. I call, from the same phone they called me on, they need my credit card information and pin, which I don't have because I am out of town and the card is at home. They say they can't talk to me until they get this information. I go to check my other account and the check was declined and my other bank charged me a declined check fee. They are so worried about my account being defrauded to pay an account that has my same name from a reputable bank account that has been used to pay them before, yet my fifth third online account is still available to me with the same credentials I used to submit the original requests. They are worried about fraud, but didn't make me change or update any of my online account information. Ridiculous.… read more

This bank is terrible. I authorized an online payment for Real Estate Taxes not realizing I had already paid it. I authorized a stop payment on the check and paid the fee. 2 weeks later fifth third debited my account for the amount of the check. Since it had gone through there was nothing they could do. My experience with Customer service was terrible. I highly recommend any other bank but this one. I will
be closing my account.

53 Bank dont give a f#
[email protected] about you.
This is the absolute bottom of the barrel. This bank will not support you in any way after they've got you in the loan. They only respond to emails with copy and pasted responses and the agents on the phone dont really pay attention. I've opened a support case with them every month I've had this loan to fix their account link window and they just keep replying
with the same copy and pasted message. I cant make a payment over the internet because their website thinks my checking account number is not valid. This is an account from another bank I use to pay all my bills. That account is accepted at all the places I pay bills except for 53.
But they don't care.… read more

We had a 72 mo. loan with 5/3 bank. From day one they were a pain starting with the fact they would not accept auto pay. After closing of the loan, no documentation was sent confirm the load was closed and paid off. Now, since title was never sent nor a lien release, they want 3 business days starting the day after the request to process a single piece of paper. Then they will only
fax it (didn't realize we were stuck in 1990) or mail it. The best part is they will not overnight or expedite the mailing process even when the customer offers to provide their FedEx account number. Also, no electronic document will be sent (email, secure website, docusign, etc...) When we requested that the fax be expedited, the answer was no we do not do that. Bottom line, 5/3 cares about one thing only, collecting their interest and nothing more. Now that the loan is paid off and their pockets have been lined, servicing the client/customer is a burden. This bank is NOT customer oriented like you would find with a credit union. STAY AWAY, far away. If an investor ever reads this, I would dump your stock as 5/3'rd banking practices are archaic and one can only hope they will be out of business in the near future. Never again will I or anyone I know do business with Fifth Third bank.....their slogan of "how can we make your day a 5/3 better" is farce and whom ever created it in their marketing department should be fired.… read more

I use to bank with 53 and eventually ended up working for the call center. I will tell you first hand that they do not keep the customer at the center of everything they do. They push for handle time to quickly get customers off of the phone. Handle time is EVERYTHING to them, the customer is not. The big one I noticed was all customer support agents are on their cell phones while on
the phone with customers. Umm how is this not a security breach? All of your personal information is right in front of their face. Social security number, address, date of birth, phone number, CREDIT CARD AND DEBIT CARD NUMBERS, everything. It would be so easy to write down your info and save it in a cell phone and there goes your whole life basically. I know almost all of other banks would not allow this for the safety of the customers but 53 does not care. I wouldn’t trust to bank with them just for this reason.
I’m glad I left when I did as they treat every customer as well as employee as another number and completely replaceable.
I would recommend going to chase, or any other bank besides Fifth Third.… read more

I have bank with fifth third for only a few months and have several bad experiences with them. The first bad experience with them was when I put a check in through the atm and it took two weeks for it to clear. The second bad experience is when I had some money wired to me no one ever told me that they use a different routing number for wiring money. After calling and waiting
for a few days for it to finally come through. The third bad experiences I have had was just yesterday 1-10-2019. I always get my checks on thursday and they are dated for the following friday. I have deposited my check in my account every thursday. Then yesterday they tell me they can't deposit it due to it being dated for the 1-11-19. The branch manager come and says i am sorry but we can't deposit the check due to the date. This branch manager has deposited my check her self with the date being posted for the following day on multiple occasions. They are by far the worst bank. The branch i delt with is the florence branch on the corner of industrial rd and us hwy 42.… read more

I set up an auto loan payment with fifth third bank. Subsequently, I tried to set up an auto-pay in early 2018. After multiple missed payments with no email, mail, or call in regards to my account, my car eventually got repossessed. It turns out that there is no record of an auto-payment which doesn't surprise me due to their archaic method of requiring you to do it by paper rather than by a process
of clicking through like most banks nowadays. I had got on and payed double the amount of the payment once as well, due to a late payment (in an attempt to pay both the late payment and the upcoming month). The amount did not go to the missed payment but to the curtailment. This is indeed a predicament due to negligence on the part of the bank, for the website seemingly only allows you to make upcoming payments without being able to go back in retroactively. The only option to pay off a missed payment would be to pay double on the current one. If there IS a way to do so it is not a simple endeavor, indicating that the bank may hold their customers to higher standards in comparison to other banks. Regardless, due to the lack of user friendly interface of their auto loan payment, especially in comparison to other banks, it almost seems an act of deception in order to apply as many fees as possible on their customers.
The day my car got repossessed, I immediately payed off everything the day of and got my car back after the weekend. Since then I have made numerous calls with Fifth Third trying to dispute the missed payments so they are at the very least not on my credit report, to no avail. Customer service lines seem to have an an air of guilt and disappointment about them, as if they are wilted from long days of complaints due to their companies terrible policies that lack any type of empathy for their customers. A letter of goodwill had no effect either, and I'm afraid my patience with the company has run its course. Legal action may need to be taken if any improvement in my financial history is to be pursued.… read more

BEWARE! Opened new checking and savings accounts with the promise of $550.00 in bonus money if the balances were maintained for 90 days. We opened the accounts on 8/7/2018. No money was taken out of the accounts since they were opened. Today - 1/8/2019 no bonus money has been deposited into our account. We have called and gone by the bank to find out why and we are always told they will look into it
and get back to us - they never do call us back. Was thinking about transferring all our funds to them and banking with them but so glad we did not! We will stay with our current bank which has been wonderful and customer service is always outstanding! I will update this review if we do receive the bonus money but I would not hold you breath.… read more

Fifth third bank is a horrific idea for a business account. I have been in business for over 30 years and made the mistake moving to this bank. As a contractor i had recieved a 2 party check from progressive insirance company in the name of my business and the customer, when i went to deposit the check they said i would need the customer with me to authorize his signature. I called the insurance
agency and the marine group and in all there times in business have never heard of this. They suggested to go to a business friendly bank and close out fifth third because they are a joke and that is an understatement ! I will be leaving fifth third in 3 days as they are a disgrace to the business community. NEVER USE FIFTH THIRD BANK I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH !… read more

Everything goes well until your card has been compromised. Here all good things end. Investigations are not conducted. A Fifth Third bank credit cards cannot be blocked online, it is also impossible to dispute an online transaction. It takes a lot of talking by phone to replace card or to start a dispute. And even if you manage to report fraudulent transactions over the phone, then their reaction will be a complete lie in formal
replies. I requested copies of the documents on the basis of which the decision was made. In response, nothing. In general, credit cards of this bank is absolutely unsafe. I do not recommend for regular payments in doubful stores. It'll be very hard return your money in case of fraud with the card of Fifth Third bank.… read more

Most incompetent bank ever. Do not get a mortgage through this company, they have messed up my Escrow, misapplied payments every year and the mortgage service is horrible. I am currently looking to pay $2,000 in closing costs for a new loan just to get away Fifth Third and it will be worth it.

Terrible customer service. I have been trying to solve an escrow issue for weeks. I have been on hold for up to 56 minutes. You wait forever to speak to a customer service rep. Even contacted the office of the CEO and was told the issue was resolved but my insurance company has still not receive payment! One of my first out of 3 credit cards I have $300 limit since that's what it costs to open one of their secured cards. Though, sooner or later. I would like to close this card once I've established a higher credit score. So I can get my $300 back and open a new credit line on their unsecured cards.

Worst customer service ever. Fifth third required me to escrow my taxes and insurance but failed to pay my insurance. I only found this out because my insurance company called to tell me they were cancelling due to no payment. I had to pay on the phone out of pocket and have been working for 6 weeks to get my money back from 5th 3rd. Even after all this, they haven’t paid my insurance, haven’t
refunded me and They still refuse to cancel my escrow so I can pay myself. More than 10 calls from both myself and from State Farm only resulted in holding more than an hour then being disconnected. I didn’t choose this bank. They bought my loan but I am looking to refi Just to get a reliable bank that is honest. These guys are definitely not! Choose another bank. Stole money, straight from my account, told me some jargon about a loophole that said I was overdrafted, meanwhile, i never was... they lost an 8 year 7 year customer over 74 dollars.... one of the worst national banks out there. Take your money anywhere but here.... god aweful, and rude customer service.... takes days and days for transactions to clear.... so you never know whats gonna clear your account, and when, inconsistencies on direct
deposits, ie... funds never available when they're supposed to be, and absolute lack of atms. And ridiculously low limits on withdrawals from their atms.... i would maybe reccomend them to my worst enemy, but only if i wanted to laugh at his expense!!!… read more

Applied for Home Equity Line Of Credit. My Loan Officer I worked with just dissapeared on me. They gave a a poor excuse and assigned me another. It took almost 2 weeks of unanswered calls and forwards to voice mail to get simple information through to start loan. Couldnt talk to anyone. Finally, Once it went forward, they only sent a drive by appraisal out. They gave me a home appraisal significantly lower than what
we purchased for 2 years before while home values were going up therefore disqualifying me for a loan. Not high enough appraisal. They refused a walk through appraisal unless I performed a whole list of steps to qualify. Discouraged we went with another bank. They did a walk through appraisal from start. Their appraisal came back $50,000 dollars more and qualified us for a loan. Going to leave FifthThird bank and take existing accounts elsewhere.… read more

After receiving an abundance of new account bonus offers, I finally decided to give them a try. The promotion was a $200 new account bonus if a minimum $500 balance was maintained. So, what the heck, give them a chance right? Wrong, don't do it. First I'm told that if I'd like to have the service charges waived all I have to do is have the account set up with direct deposit. So, I do.
Every week a direct deposit. After the first month, an $11.00 service charge. I call to find out why. I'm told the direct deposits must total $500 during the month to qualify.
Still, I wait the 90 days for the $200 bonus to pay. You guessed it, no payment. I inquire to find out why. Customer service directs me to the branch. The branch can't do anything to correct the account to pay the $200 bonus because I don't have the original code. That's because I gave it to the representative, Curtis Gardner, Jr., when I opened the account. And, shazam, he no longer works there.
Not sure they even deserve one star!… read more

I have been with Fifth Third (5/3) bank for 4.5 years and have a very negative experience since day 1. (I wrote this review while I was on hold, trying to reach customer service)
1. They make expensive mistakes ($1,200)- We got out mortgage from 5/3 bank when we bought out house. In our negotiation, the sellers were to cover $5,000 of closing costs. Just before loan closure, I got a call from the senior mortgage
officer telling me that he wasn't sure that the $5,000 would be enough and he thought I should agree to increase my interest rate to cover the difference. If that was done, the difference would be less than $5,000 dollars. He assured me that I would be given the difference (I specifically asked.) However, the remaining $1,200 dollars was refunded to the sellers.
2. Don't complete work in a timely manner- We signed a contract for our house ~2 months before closing. We had been pre-approved and all documents were submitted in a timely manner. 5/3 bank demonstrated very poor service in completing the documents on their end. They were barely able to get the paperwork complete to wire the money for closing on our close date.
3. Unable to add spouse- 5/3 bank would not give my wife access to account. Multiple phone calls were made to add her to the account and I was assured that she would be added. Eventually I was told that I would have to go to the branch to fill out the appropriate paperwork. I went in on two occasions and filled out the paperwork, but they still wouldn't give her any information- not even a balance over the phone.
4. Unexpected fees- We tried to use our account as little as possible because of the fees and hassles of working with them. Despite rarely using checks, they would still periodically send us books of checks that we never asked for and bill us for them.
5. Difficulty getting through- We recently sold our house. We were so excited to finally close our account with 5/3 bank. As soon as they deposited our money we transferred it to an institution we trust. Weeks later they still haven't closed the account and they just charged us the monthly fee for the checking account that we don't use, that put us into overdraft. *This they actually just reversed over the phone when I asked to speak with a supervisor. I was on hold for ~20 minutes before the call was answered by customer service. She wanted to transfer me and told me to expect to be on hold for 11 more minutes. I wasn't too happy about that.
I conclusion, we are so happy to finally have this account closed. We have had a very negative experience with 5/3 bank. I cannot recommend that anyone go to them for a mortgage or for an account.… read more

If I could have left a zero star I would have! While I was in jail my only bank card was guarded by the summit county sheriffs. 5th 3rd let my ex girl friend get a card to the account & she stole $533.00. They denied a refund so I reported it to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Then I get the $533.00 put into my account and my online banking said "Provisional Credit For
Disputed Item". Well me being mentally disabled figured they gave me the money I was owed. It wasn't till later that I found out they could take it back and send my account into negative 533.00. I live on social security for my schizophrenia if they take that money I will be unable to pay my rent! First off with my low income they shouldn't have done such a thing, further more I should have had some kind of E-mail or something explaining the nature of this Provisional Credit For Disputed Item & there was none. Only a deposit of $533 on my online banking.… read more

Biggest bunch of Thieves in the world. Over-drafted my account once for $0.26 and charge me $37.50 in overdraft fees. You can have overdraft protection and transfer the money from your savings to your checking but guess what? They charge you $37.50 for that convenience too. I took out a personal loan to repair a car and they of course used the FICA credit score. But wait there's another score they use. The "how good
have you been to Fifth Third Bank" score. What is that? That little quote came from the bank branch manager and I had a score of 8.5 whatever that signifies. I'd say I've been pretty good to Fifth Third Bank giving them $37.50 for covering a $0.26 overdraft. As you'll see it the description of Fifth Third Bank at the top of the page they called Fifth Third the Curious Bank. The only thing it's curious is why anyone has anything to do with them. They've never seen a fee they didn't like. I was told to discontinue overdraft protection I would have to come in and fill out some paperwork. But lo and behold on their Android app there's a check box next to the account to disable it. Why would they want to lie about this and make it more difficult to do? Because overdraft fees are the biggest Cash Cow for them. Gee they float me a loan for $0.26 for 2 days for $37.50? I would like to do that to them all day long. In Ohio there was a movement to Force the payday loan industry to charge a lesser rate than 480% a year that they were customarily charging people for a 2-week loan. At the same time Fifth Third Bank introduced a program called Ready Reserve. With ready Reserve you could borrow $500 for up to 2 weeks for $50. This is the exact same charge that the payday loan companies were charging people that the Ohio legislature was trying to get rid of. Funny thing is there must have been a loophole in the law to allow a bank to do it but not a corner Payday Loan Company. These people are just as big as slime balls as the corner loan company. Maybe even worse. If you go to a Payday Loan Company you know they're slime and are charging you through the roof which used to be called Usery intrest rates years ago and Usery interest was illegal. But due to the deregulation of the financial institutions usury rates are now okay even for Fifth Third Bank. Thieves Crooks Scoundrels take your pick all apply. If you bank with Fifth Third Bank you're absolutely nuts! A more fitting in descriptive name for them is Big Turd Bank.… read more

Do you like fees? 5/3 likes fees. Overdraft fees, atm fees, fees to use checks (not just the fee to purchase the checks themselves), fees to go inside and use a teller instead of online or atm banking, etc. If there is something to tack a fee onto, 5/3 is happy to do so. It just keeps getting worse. It’s a real pain to transfer everything (the funds, direct deposit, automatic bill pay, etc), but
I’ve seriously considered it many times. I’m not sure how they have a 4 star rating with so many 1 star reviews. They’re pretty horrible. I haven’t even thought of using any other products there. My auto loan, savings, etc are with other banks.… read more

This is a joke of a bank. I opened a secured card many years ago with them. They said after awhile the card would go unsecured if you made all of the payments on time. After 3 years I had added extra deposits to have a credit line of $2150. They refused several times to let any of the line go unsecured even though i had never missed a payment. I finally closed the account
so that I could get my $2150 cash back. I made the mistake of opening another secured card in july of last year. They outright refused to send my card to a P.O. Box. Even though the card would be in a secure facility behind a locked box, they said it was a security risk. They said they could send the card to my home address via Fedex. I informed them that I would be out of the country for a week and not to send it because i would not be there. They went ahead and sent it anyway, and charged me $30 for it. Of course I was not there to sign for it and it went back. Then today i tried to change my address on my account. They only have 1 address line in their computer and it wont take any addresses with suite numbers. This is only the bank in history that only has one address line. So if you have a long street name, your suite numbers or box numbers are completely cut off. When I said that no other bank has only one address line they said, "I don't know how other banks do it, but that's the way our computer system is here." I informed here that I changed all my addresses on all of my other accounts and not one gave me a problem.
