I loved this company. I never had a claim that I had to resolve with Farmers Mutual of Tennessee, so I can't report on that aspect of them. I am no longer with the company, however, because I found a lower rate at a different company. I imagine the reason for the lower rate is that they are a national chain of insurance underwriters that can afford a bit more of a risk. Farmers Mutual, though, had probably the best customer service I have ever experienced with an insurance company. If they were to offer lower rates than what I have now, I would switch back to them in a heartbeat.
State Farm has been great in the area of home insurance. I live in a condo, which makes things a little bit more complicated in this department and this was my first time buying home insurance so I had a lot of questions. The customer service representative was incredibly helpful and she gave me as much time as I required, even fielding multiple calls from me. The price seems extremely low for what I'm getting. The only thing I can't write about is how they handle a claim. I've had my home for nearly 5 years and have been fortunate to not have to deal with this.
When I first applied for a mortgage, it was with a company that (I didn’t realize at the time) sold mortgages to other companies. This original company allowed me to pay with a credit card (which I have learned is uncommon), and allowed me to accumulate points. My mortgage was sold to Chase, and they don’t allow credit card payments, which is the only reason for a 4-star review instead of a 5-star review. Aside from the upsetting ~$10 fee for paying with a credit card, Chase gave me no troubles with my mortgage. I was able to pay online with a bank transfer for free, which saved me the hassle and cost of postage every month. Overall, I had a pleasant experience with them, but just be careful about the nickel-and-dime tricks that all banks use.
A year or so ago, Regions (along with many other banks) instituted a new policy concerning checking accounts. Due to low revenue, they were incurring a monthly charge on checking accounts unless certain conditions were met. The conditions, though, were either too difficult to meet or were not worth the hassle. After speaking with multiple people at the branch, I went in to close my account so I could open a new account at a credit bureau. Luckily, right as I was about to sign the paper, my wife (who had been speaking to the loan officer we often dealt with) found out that because we had a mortgage with them, we could waive our fee. Again, I know that this is not a unique policy, but they really need to reconsider.
