When I graduated from high school, one of the first checking accounts I opened was at Hawaii USA FCU. I don't really remember the application process which makes me think that I had no real issues with the process. The FCU has the most branches in Honolulu. There is actually a branch right across the street from me. Their checking and savings rates are pretty comparable to the local credit unions, but they are much better than the local banks. I've only had one small problem with the bank and that was an overdraft fee. I didn't really agree with what happened so I called the FCU to see if they could drop the fee. They did and that was that.
I have a car loan with Hickam FCU and got a great rate. I worked with Sylvia mostly through e-mail and that made transactions 100 times smoother because I am busy with work. I recently purchased my car and had a decent rate but saw that Hickam FCU had a special for 1.49% APR on new cars so I jumped on the chance to pay a bit less over the total of the loan. My fiancée and I went in to the Pearlridge branch on a Saturday, which was a little busy but we got out within about an hour of getting there. We signed all the paperwork and the loan was processed. They made it pretty simple by sending the rest of the documents via snail mail to finalize the loan. Great credit union if you're looking for a car loan at a low rate.
Honolulu Federal Credit Union is a very good credit union. I've had them since I was very young. I've never really had an issue with them but I don't really have too much money in either my checking or my savings account with them. They have 5 branches so it’s not very difficult if you have to go in to see a member service rep. We usually go to the branch near Ala Moana because they know me as well as my fiancé. They have pretty good rates but not the best if that is really all you care about. All in all, a good credit Union I have no qualms with.
The Queen's FCU is a credit union which is available for those who work in the health care industry. They have two branches, both of which are relatively small. Although they are a small credit union this allows them to get very close to their customers. All of the employees are very friendly and very helpful when I come in. I have my checking, savings, and an auto loan with the Queen's FCU. Their rates are a little lower on their checking and savings accounts but I'll gladly give up 0.05% APR for a better experience at their branches. Their ATMs are First Hawaiian Bank ATMs so they are relatively plentiful.
I have a Hawaii State FCU savings account and they have a really good rate considering most banks are only at around 0.1% APR. I don't really go too often because I only have a savings account there, but when I do have to go they have pretty good customer service. My fiance tried to get a home equity line of credit with them but at the time we didn't have enough equity. They were nice enough to allow us to only have to pay for the appraisal. That was probably the best customer service we received in a banking setting. Their loan rates are also relatively low but we have found a lower loan rate at Hickam FCU.
