I am now using Wells Fargo for a checking account. I decided to switch because it was going to make it a lot easier for me to start paying my bills online instead of by hand (and writing checks) each month. I now have all of my utilities being automatically drafted from my Wells Fargo account. This includes my mortgage, power, water, phone, internet and cable TV. The online web site sends me an email when these transactions take place so I do not have to worry about if they got their payment each month or not. Another nice feature of the web site is that it will send me an alert email if my balance goes below $100. When this happens, I can simply log in and transfer money from my savings account. This transaction occurs instantly which is very useful in some situations!
We have a Bank of America checking account and credit card, American Express. On the BoA the web site, these two accounts are linked together. If I need to pay off the credit card, I can easily transfer money from my checking to the credit card account and it is paid off. Over the holidays, I was expecting a check in the mail from Maine and it was delayed several days because a bad snow storm. I had overdrafted because of this and got an overdraft penalty. After explaining the situation to customer service, they undid the penalty without giving any grief. I was very happy about this.
We had a water leak in our basement a month ago from an old, worn-out water pipe. It was a slow leak and not immediately noticeable. Since we are not in the basement very often, it was a long time before we noticed the leak. This caused a lot of damage to one of the walls and carpets in two rooms. We had to pay to get the leak fixed ourselves, but State Farm paid to have the two rooms cleaned and the carpet and padding replaced. The whole process was very smooth. While our agent was helpful, we mostly dealt with the adjuster over the phone. They were also very helpful and efficient throughout the entire process.
I have a bank account with Capital One. My account was recently purchased from ING Direct, but all of the features are the same. I like the website security. Instead of entering in a password, you click a number-pad style widget for your password. This prevents keystroke viruses from capturing your password. When I transfer money, it seems to get processed much faster than at my brick and mortar banks. There is only one ATM that is near me, at Target, but this is OK as I usually just use my debit card. I also have a savings account with them and it is very easy to transfer money to and from that account.
I am a very happy Esurance customer. First off, their rate was actually over $100 less than what I was paying with another carrier. My first experience using them was when I locked my keys in my car. I called their number and they sent someone out to unlock the car immediately. Since I had the roadside service with Esurance this did not cost me anything. Another time, I ran out of gas and was stuck on the side of the road. Again, Esurance to the rescue. Although it took a little bit longer than I wanted it to, they sent someone out with a small gas tank. I was then able to drive to a gas station to fill up. I will always pay for the roadside assistance as it has been a life saver.
