Although I have not had any negative experiences with State Farm, or anything close for that matter, one word and one word alone sums up my experience with them and that word is EXPENSIVE. I had State Farm for a short time because it was the company in which my parents always had. I was young and did not bother to shop around and boy, did I pay for it! As soon as I switched over to one of the other “popular” companies, I cut my premium over 40% with almost identical coverage. That is completely absurd and unacceptable. Their customer service may be top notch, but it’s not worth that much more money.
My experience with Emigrant Bank (EmigrantDirect) roots back to the days when you could find decent online savings rates to earn interest on your stockpile. One thing these guys have going for them is that they are the oldest savings bank in NYC, so you don’t need to fear their competence level. I never had an issue with their simplistic web interface nor their customer service associates and it appears they still have somewhat competitive rates on their savings accounts. I would suggest anyone looking for a decent online-only savings account that they at least consider EmigrantDirect along with banks like Ally and ING.
I was previously a customer of Allstate in Maryland. Their rates were only decent and during my time with them, I seemed like I was just a statistic and not an actual customer. Now, I did not have any truly negative experiences, but they seem too straight laced. All correspondence I received or dealt with seemed like it was with a form letter or a computer-generated voice. In addition, their web interface seemed very lackluster and behind in the times in comparison to the major competitors. You will get a similar level of service with better rates by going with Progressive or Geico.
For me, GEICO has been your “typical” auto insurance company, but with better rates and more important advertisements. Signing up with them was a breeze, as was rolling over my existing homeowners insurance policy. I love the fact that they are easy to get a hold of (by phone) and also offer a variety of discounts that are easily accessible through the web site. With regard to the web site, it has one of the better user interfaces that I have seen in a financial or insurance company. Although the exorbitant amount of advertising I see, makes me wonder how much lower my rates would be if the advertisements didn't exist. I have no real complaints so far.
Ally Bank has been my go-to bank for my savings account needs for the past few years. I am very risk averse when it comes to my money, so I can appreciate a savings account that yields the best interest rate possible. Ally has been consistently near the top regarding interest rates for savings accounts. Furthermore, they will also let you access your savings account via ATM and will actually reimburse you for any fees that you incur. Every time I have had a customer service need, there has been a friendly individual on the other end of the phone willing to help me. It is hard to get better than this.
PenFed rates are excellent, but this is another case of “you get what you pay for”. I recently did a re-fi with them because of their awesome promotions and rates, but their customer service people must be inundated with workload. You have to stay on their representatives like on a person with severe ADHD. Also, don’t forget to watch for typographical mistakes. Furthermore, it is nearly impossible to get any kind of written reassurance that you qualify for the promotions they mention. It is an uphill battle to get things done with them, but well worth the effort in the end, just keep your eye on the prize.
Homesite offers competitive prices, especially when combined with one of the participating auto insurance providers, but their customer service has been “hit or miss” in my experiences with the company. When switching auto insurance providers, I had a really tough time getting this straightened out with them as they forced me to create a new policy. Furthermore, the times I have reached out to get more documentation, I have received inconsistent results. I also had a tough time getting a straight answer from a CSR on a claim that I was considering filing. In this case, I feel like you get what you pay for.
The Aberdeen Proving Grounds Federal Credit Union is an institution which I have recommended to local friends that are starting out with their first checking account or personal loan of some kind. The allure for me, has always been their numerous locations in the area and that the bank and their employees still have that “small town” feel when doing business with them. They have decent rates on their loans and credit cards, great offers on life insurance rates and also a very low fee coin counter in some of their branches. The only drawback, as is the case with most credit unions, is that they are not nationally available, but for local use, it is a great place to do your banking.
When I was younger, my parents steered me toward smaller credit unions and while they can have their benefits, at some point, you will need to “graduate” to a larger institution. The greatest thing about PNC Bank, other than their professionalism in the industry, is the fact that you can find one of their facilities almost anywhere. It seems that I am never more than 10 miles away from a PNC. Furthermore, I love the fact that they reimburse you for using non-PNC ATMs (if you keep enough money in your account) and I also love their online interface. I highly recommend them!
Before moving from Allstate, I was a little unsure about Progressive. I was leery of the fact that none of my friends or co-workers used them and because of their low rates. Recently, I was at a red light and was hit from behind by another driver. It was my first auto accident and I immediately called customer service from my vehicle. Customer service answered within 10 seconds and took all of the details down. Outside of having to take part in a few phone calls, they handled the accident with the utmost efficiency. Progressive isn’t just a leader in advertising, but also in service. I’d recommend them to anyone.
