I have both homeowners and car insurance with Amica. Amica is a local insurance company in Rhode Island, and I have done business with them for years. I have friends and neighbors who work at Amica so doing business with them feels like doing business with friends. They have great customer service and have always been quick to respond to any incidents I have reported over the years.
I have had a savings account with Chase for several years. Although Chase doesn't have branches in my state, I use my account when I travel to New York (on business) or Florida (for vacation) where Chase does have branches. I have been very pleased with Chase's service. Everyone is so friendly and eager to help. I only wish they would open some branches in Rhode Island where I spend most of my time.
Amica is a big employer in my home state so it feels right to do business with them. When I bought a house, I got a quote for homeowners insurance through Amica. Their rates were comparable to other companies, but the fact that they were local made me feel better about doing business with them. When I called their customer service department, the agents I spoke to were pleasant and helpful. Any problems I have had were minor and easily resolved. At this point, my plan is to stay with Amica.
I opened a Target Red Card when I was shopping on line and found a kitchen set that I wanted to purchase as a house-warming gift for my son who has just moved into his first apartment. I was tipped off by one of Target's customer service people that if I opened a Red Card, I would get free shipping (my son lives in another state), plus I would receive 5% off the price which pretty much covered the sales tax. I plan on keeping my card because I know I will be making future purchases at Target.
The Capital One Cash Rewards for Newcomers has some pros and cons. With an interest rate of almost 25%, it would not be a good option for those with a high credit score who can qualify for low interest cards. This Capital One card appears to be marketed at consumers with only fair credit ratings and a limited credit history. So it might be a viable option for younger consumers who have no credit history. On the pro side, the card does offer cash back rewards and no balance transfer fee.
I have had a savings account with Webster Bank for several years now. It was very easy to set up. In fact I set it up when I opened several other accounts at Webster. I do a lot of business with Webster, and I visit several of their branches regularly. I have found that their customer service is excellent. The Webster staff seems to go out of their way to make me feel comfortable and to answer my questions. I am not a big depositor, but I feel like one when I go into any Webster branch. I have never experienced any problems with my savings account. I keep track of the account by going on line which is very convenient. I highly recommend Webster for anyone who is looking for a regional (not one of those too big to fail) banks.
I applied for the Sears card when I found an air mattress there that was on sale. When I went to the store to buy it, the clerk offered to open a Sears credit card for me and give me an immediate $15 credit on the air mattress. I only had to give them my social security number and date of birth to qualify. Within a week I had my new card. I went back to Sears and bought two pairs of shoes (also on sale). When I got the bill, I noticed that I had earned some points for discounts on future purchases. With Christmas coming, I am sure I will be using those points.
When I moved back to Rhode Island last year and bought a home, I had to search for home owners insurance. I did a search on the web, compared prices, and received the best quote from Providence Mutual Fire Insurance Co. Their rates couldn't be matched by any other company. I haven't had to put in any claims, but I have called their office to ask some billing questions. I found everyone to be personable and helpful. The office isn't too far from my house if I need to stop in there to pay a bill or ask a question. This year when my policy was up for renewal, I checked rates again. Providence Mutual quoted me the lowest rate so I decided to renew the policy. I will continue to check rates, but I have a feeling I am doing as well as I can do right now.
When I moved back to RI, I noticed that there was a new bank in town, Webster Bank. I had to open a checking account, savings account, etc. and I prefer doing business with smaller banks. It seems that large banks show little interest in their customers and tend to take them for granted. I did not find that attitude at all at Webster. Everyone was welcoming and seemed grateful for my business. I have now been with the bank for over a year, and nothing has changed. The employees are cheerful and helpful. So I recommend Webster highly.
