Before I moved for college, I was a member of the Silver State Schools Credit Union. This bank was great for me when I was younger because it made it easier to manage my money and learn how to save. The bank offered great resources and advice for me when I opened an account and the fact that I never had to pay any fees really encouraged me to keep using the bank. I also had a savings account with the bank which had a comparatively high interest rate compared to the national banks, which was a huge benefit especially for a young person that wanted to maximize my earning power on the small amount I was saving.
I recently purchased a new home and American Family Insurance seemed to offer competitive rates so I purchased a policy. Last year, however, Hurricane Sandy took a pretty heavy toll on my newly purchased home and much of the damage was not covered, making it very difficult to live comfortably in the home or be financially able to remedy the flooding damage that was caused. The customer service was very helpful and empathetic, but I had to seek out federal assistance since my home insurance policy wasn't enough. I rated three stars though because after the hurricane I was able to expand my coverage to a more comprehensive policy and now I feel a bit more confident for when natural disasters strike.
I use several different banks, and of all of them, Wells Fargo is by far my favorite. First, they have a great student checking and savings account option, which allows me to forgo having required minimum balances and the like in order to have no monthly fees. The customer service has been fast AND easy both when I visit a branch location or when I call on the phone. I once lost my debit card and had multiple mysterious charges which resulted in significant overdraft fees, and when I called customer service to report the missing card and open a claim, they resolved the issue within 24 hours and reversed all of the fees. It was such a relief to be able to know I can rely on them to help me.
Nationwide provides a quality experience. Firstly, their customer service has been consistently accessible and helpful. Every time I've had an incident and needed to put in a claim, the process was fairly painless and resolved quickly. Further, my policy is affordable and they have given me great discounts for being a good student and for going a certain period of time without an accident. There have been no hidden fees or unusual changes in my rate or policy coverage. I feel confident that I am protected in the event of an accident beyond my control, which is especially important for me since I live in an area with many natural disasters, thus a lot of what might happen to my car is out of my control. I would definitely recommend Nationwide to a friend looking for coverage.
