I opted to switch from my mainline bank about a year ago from one of the larger establishments to Ally.In all honesty, it was a smart decision as both the customer service and clarity of what to expect have greatly improved. I was sick of my larger institution being 'wishy washy' and unclear with expectations. More than once I received a questionable fee and/or charge that was neither prompted by my transactions nor communicated to me effectively. Ally immediately set me up with notifications and while I've yet to receive any such fees (another positive) I feel comfortable trusting them with my money. Recommended!
This was a reasonable if not average account to have during my time as a student. There was no overdraft protection (at least until I asked about it repeatedly) and my overdraft fees were nearly $40 each time. There was a monthly fee to simply have the account and one of the only real perks was the very low ‘foreign transaction fee’. Thankfully, I studied abroad and knew to ask for ‘American currency’ anyway so this became a moot point. On the whole, it was a functional alternative but hardly a special place to keep my checking account.
My Regions checking account has been a no hassle situation. I get warnings if I’m near an overdraft, I have cheap ATM fees, and the customer service has always been quick and thorough. As a student, I don’t have a lot of cash flowing my way but it’s nice to have an account that seems rooted in helping me thrive and not fight me with fees and charges every step of the way. Very recommended!
