I think there are some good and bad things with this card. A 25 day grace period is nice, in case you are having trouble paying on time but that APR can get a little high. Personally, I would never use a card that could shoot up to almost 23% after a year. The smart chip is an essential tool to have in a new card so I do like that. Again, I would never take out a cash advance with a 15% fee. It would make more sense to take the time to take a bank loan out instead.
I was skeptical of this bank, at first, after they absorbed FirstBank about a year and a half ago. I have gone through similar takeovers and always been left less than impressed by the resulting service or account mishaps. I was actually very pleasantly surprised by how smoothly this transition went. In fact, once Mercantile took over they really did simplify the checking accounts even more. My favorite part was when they removed the requirement to view monthly statements online in order to avoid incurring any fees on your checking account. I do have one slight complaint and that is simply that the online information isn't updated very frequently throughout the day so it is kind of hard to access your account information in real time. It's an admittedly small detail but it is just a small bump to deal with. In every other way this bank has served me well and I love how quickly deposits show up in this checking account. I would seriously recommend them to someone in Michigan looking for a new bank.
This has been, overall a great credit union to do business with throughout the years. I've been a member for about 16 years and the only issue I ever had with them had to do with a security breach involving debit cards about 5 years ago. There was no notification from the credit union about the breach other than they just simply up and cancelled the debit cards of a massive amount of people who were potentially affected by the breach. Of course this meant that people like me discovered this when we went to put gas in the car and our card won't work. This happened on a Friday evening and I couldn't get ahold of anyone at the bank until Monday. Then I had to wait about 10 days to get a new card and then everything was fine. Just irritating more than anything, really.
I have had Auto-Owners for 3 years now and the customer service is better than anywhere else in the industry, by far. After my wife had to make a claim this winter she had her full reimbursement within a week and a half. The representative was actually quite kind to us and it didn't feel like we were dealing with an insurance adjuster at all. The pricing for a policy is a bit lower than average for our area but we live in a state with some of the highest insurance premiums in the nation so every little bit helps. Some companies love to make you jump through hoops in the approval process to sign up by Auto Owner's is not one of them. We were so happy that after our first six months we bundled our home-owner's insurance with them, as well. I can't promise that you won't find a better company but you would certainly have to look very hard to find one.
I had a couple of bad experiences with this bank that resulted in me leaving them and never looking back. After setting up a mortgage through them and signing up for automatic bill pay they accidentally withdrew two monthly mortgage payments from my account, simultaneously. Later that month they did the same thing with my car payment. A couple of months later the same check cleared twice. It even had the same check number listed in the details! What really irritated me was that in each case it took weeks to get the money and huge overdraft fees back. At the end of the day it buried me so far into debt that I fell behind on credit cards and eventually defaulted on them. I would never recommend Fifth Third.
