No credit card needed
I've used Transunion several times to check my credit score and keep tabs on my progress towards rebuilding my credit as I had ruined it about two years ago. Lots of tools at my disposal to help me with the info I need without all the extras you don't need.
Bank of America is a great bank. I had been using Chase for years, but started to get tired of all these new fees they kept charging. I was paying almost $100/month in various "fees" with Chase, and no matter how many times I called to have this rectified, they absolutely refused to fix it. So we switched to Bank of America and haven't looked back. There's BofA ATM's everywhere, so pulling cash out of an ATM is hassle free. Most of their branches (of which there are many) have 4 or 5 ATM's instead of 1 or 2 like most banks, so no waiting in a long line! Checking is actually *free* if you have Direct Deposit. No tricky hidden fees! I have had some various issues that weren't clear when I opened the account, but after talking with customer service, I found them in the agreement I signed but failed to completely read. Still, great company.
We've had a lane bryant card for a few years now, first starting off as a basic member with $150 in credit, and ultimately leading up to platinum status at the moment with over $600 in credit. That's one heck of a shopping spree! Applying for the card was quick and easy and done right there on the spot in the store. We got our card in the mail about a week later so that was a really fast turn around. The APR is a little high, but when you reach platinum status you can call them up and negotiate for a lower rate. Having this card entitles you to their magazine monthly and you frequently get coupons for things like $75 off $150, which means you can really maximize your savings. I would like to see more credit line increases, but that and the APR are about the only negatives I can think of.
I got this card a few years ago from USAA as one of their selected offers. I've been a USAA customer for 29 years now, so it only made sense that I accept any product they offer. They've never treated me wrong. The annual fee is pretty small compared to some other cards I've had in the past, and their customer service is absolutely top notch. No over-limit fees. no monthly transaction fees. And best of all, the initial $250 deposit goes into an interest-bearing CD. I can't say enough about this card, and I will continue to be a USAA customer for years to come.
