Randy Begole does a great job of providing the services my family needs without trying to sell us more services than we want. He contacts us once a year to check in and let us know about some things we may want to consider. I like that he does check in but does so only once a year so as not to be overly salesy.
This card is not exceptional. You can find other cards that will give you 1 point for every dollar you spend and that don't charge an annual fee. This card charges an annual fee after the first year. As a company, I like American Express and the fact that you are expected to pay the card off each month. As far as being a company that does not overly add to the credit crisis we are in as a country, American Express is great. As far as this card's rewards, there are more beneficial cards out there.
I definitely don't spend more than $500 per month at gas stations, so I would never hit the higher rebate thresholds. Plus, having to wait until you have earned $25 in cash back before getting any benefit is a long time to wait. Basically if I fill up with 10 gallons every fill up, I would get $0.50 cash back. It would then take me 50 separate fill ups to earn enough for the $25 gas card. If my husband and I would both use it, that would cut that time in half, but that still seems like very little benefit compared to other credit card offers out there.
The monthly fee makes this card very unappealing. You can tie it to a checking account to avoid the monthly fee, but then you essentially just have a normal debit card. Commerce Bank offers a similar card, called the My Spending card, that only charges a 1 time activation fee of $5.95. Since the Commerce Bank card has no monthly fees, it is a great way to keep spending money separate from a checking account that is used to pay bills.
