Hanover Insurance is a pretty great choice if you are trying to stay away from the big insurance companies. They offer a wide range of options and coverages. Awhile back my grandmother totaled out her car, their agent was on site quickly and got everything taken car of with little to no hassles. She had the money for the vehicle in her account within days so she could get back on her feet and get going again. I highly recommend their personal touch of service.
My local bank was unable to [provide me coverage for certain things I needed, so I decided to check into some of the local credit unions. Throughout the years people had spoken so highly of credit unions and how they were so much better than modern banks, so I decided to give them a try. Ascend Federal Credit union was often mentioned in these discussions, so they were the one I went for in this situation. I must say, everyone was right. There is a night and day difference between a credit union and a traditional bank. The customer service is exemplary and I am getting much better interest rates on practically everything I am using there. Ascend doesn't make you jump through the typical hoops that you encounter at most "big banks". No required direct deposits or minimum balances. It's great. Highly recommend.
Trouble with many of the big banks is becoming more and more of a problem so recently I decided to take the advice I have heard from many people and try out a local credit union. The difference between the two are night and day. I could not be more impressed. The employees here know you, your accounts, and how you like things to be handled, all without having to be told. This will often lead to them processing things before I have requested them to be a certain way.The staff are incredibly friendly and they helped me finance a new house when I needed to more to another part of the state. I could not ask for more from Old Hickory Credit Union. Don't deal with the hassle of big banks when credit unions like this one exist.
This is my go to bank when I need absolutely anything. They always go above and beyond and are willing to help however is needed. I had a problem with a check not being approved from another bank. My grandmother, who is unable to drive anymore, was the only person at home. Wilson Bank and Trust sent one of their teller representatives out to the house to get a check which would cover the amount needed. I would never expect this type of customer service from one of the "big banks" All they would do is say tough crap. This is what dealing with a small, hometown bank gets you. Amazing customer service.
I had a checking account through Bank of America for years. The ability to have so many locations was a nice convenience, but after so long, I could no longer justify how horrible their customer service and practices were. Fees on everything, The customer was never write, no matter how much evidence they were given to the contrary. They knew they had you and there was nothing you could do about it. Get everything in explicit writing. Or better yet, go somewhere else.
I went to open a savings account at Wilson Bank and Trust so I could aside money for a new vehicle in a few months. The tellers and managers went above and beyond to help me set this up, along with canceling another account and transferring that money over. They made the transition painless and smooth. They even set me up with a money market account so I could get a higher interest rate - something I was absolutely not expecting. The interest rate is now much more than I was expecting, and I will continue to pump whatever extra money I can into this account so it can grow in the long term. Great account and great people. I will always have my business here.
The checking account through Pinnacle National Bank is exactly as the name describes: Basic. You won't get any additional perks with this account. No interest rates or cash back opportunities. On the plus side, you won't incur typical fees that some banks use. If you need a basic account, just to store your money while you use it, this is the place to go. I would recommend shopping around though to see if you can get account with another bank that will give you something for your business.
Willis Credit Union offers outstanding customer service if you know what you need and what can be done. They will go out of their way to respond to any problems you have and fix them. The only problem is, you need to know what the problem is because they aren't always clear in their details. I had an account that did not specify certain fees for withdrawals. So, to my surprise, I was hit with several fees for them. After speaking to the bank employees, they fixed the problem and refunded my fees. They apologized for the miscommunication also. Hopefully they will update disclosure agreements to be more clear in the future.
While the checking account from Fort Still national Bank does offer a pretty good interest rate if you have over $500 in it, it it more than made up for by the exorbitant amount of fees they take out. I mean, they take out fees for everything. Fee just for the account? Check. They even charge to do online bill pay, which in this day and age is ridiculous. I recommend staying far away.
I have had a savings account with Fifth Third Bank for a few years now and it adequately meets my needs. It doesn't give the best return on investment but having multiple branches around I can access is a definite plus. Their online access is second to none though, so you can easily keep track of your savings and makes changes and withdrawals as needed. Every bank should endeavor to have an online experience like the one Fifth Third has. If you need a savings account that gives a halfway decent return and is convenient, this is the place to go. If you are only looking to get the highest interest rate possible, you can definitely find better elsewhere.
I went searching for a checking account with the highest interest rate I could find and First Bank checking definitely fit that bill. They were offering .8% which is amazing for a checking account! You won't find a rate like that anywhere else. You also don't have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get it. Can't recommend enough.
The General is great if you need a low cost and low coverage policy. They are cheap, but you also don't get much coverage. If liability is all you need, they are great. Don't be surprised though if you get into a wreck and find out stuff isn't covered or you don't have enough to cover the other person. I ended up getting sued for the extra amount that they didn't cover. While I eventually won my case, it was harrowing and I got no support from the General at all.
