No credit card needed
just applied today when buying a new lawnmower. Been trying to rebuild my credit since college. I was stupid and have two collections and a 590 score. Started building my credit last october with no late payments and I have been paying off every card every month. I also have a secured credit card from my credit union. It is 250 dollars. Hoefully everything is helping me rebuild. I was approved for an 800 dollar limit. Some of my other cards are through ge capital and I have never had a problem with them. I am about to be a male nurse and hopefully my increased income helps me even more.
I have 4 cards - all have rewards benefits. The 3 non-Amex cards have no yearly fee but it is much harder to accrue points on them.I use my Amex most because of the extended warranty protection (they replaced a phone and a printer in the years I've been with them), ease of disputing charges, 1 bag free, companion ticket, pay with miles program and ease of accruing miles. I'm okay with the fee because I get much more value than I pay for the card. One thing I have never understood over these many years is what benefit MQM's are? What do I get if I accrue these? I've never seen a feature/benefit statement on any literature or offers. Overall, this is a great card for me.
I have used the preferred card since February while traveling through Europe. Besides the point accumulation, the foreign conversion fee waiver is a major positive point. The card is a Visa, which hasn’t been a problem so far, but there is a downside as the card has no embedded chip. So have cash ready on the toll roads of Austria. Up-side is when a clerk gets hold of it they really look it over since it must be made of metal due to the weight and stiffness. They seem to smile a bit more unless their French; they lower their nose just a bit. And if you rent cars, the rental insurance is really helpful and can go a long way to covering the $95 annual fee.
Me and my wife choose this card as a way to build credit after having some negative things impact it due to a job loss. We sent in our deposit and received our card about 7 days afterwards. We were really impressed. If you pay your balance in full every month then there is no interest charge what so ever. We have never missed a payment or been late so I really do not know what the collection process is like or anything. And my credit score has jumped 30 points in the last 3 months simply from using this card wisely. We just upped our credit limit from $200 to $1000 and it was so easy! The people are nice and know what they are talking about. So if you are looking for a secured card this really is the one that I would recommend!
