No credit card needed
I had a discover rewards card and I enjoyed how it let me transfer a high balance with a 0% APR. It helped me not have to pay interest while I paid off a high balance on the card. It was also useful for giving rewards until I was able to cancel the card (along with all my credit cards) and get out of debt for good. Although I don't usually recommend doing balance transfers, it worked in this case to help me get out from under a large interest rate on a large balance.
I found the Chase freedom card to be harder to work with than other credit cards that I have had. There interest rate pops up to over 30 percent after only one late payment, and they lowered my credit rating without even letting me know they had done it. I understand if they want to lower it to protect themselves, but it would have been nice to know what was going on. I also would have preferred a website that is easier to work with. I had trouble logging on because of their complex log in system. I felt like I was having to get through top secret security to even see my current balance or pay my bill.
The Old Navy store card is so easy to sign up for, for a very good reason. Within a week, I had received my card and was told that I needed to pay shortly for what I had charged at the store. I had a $30 late fee slapped on my account to fast my head was spinning, on a balance that was only $20 itself! I paid that payment, lost another bill envelope, and then ANOTHER $30 late fee shows up. I signed up to pay online and paid off the balance. A $1.13 fee shows up out of nowhere on a balance that had been $0. I made sure and paid that immediately so another $30 late fee did not show up. Needless to say, I cancelled this card shortly after paying it off. It was just not worth it to pay such outrageous late fees for being just a few days late!
Although the cash back rewards and the 25% bonus on time payment for the Journey Student Rewards from Capital One are tempting, let’s face facts that this is a credit card designed for students. A credit card designed to get students used to buying their lives on credit. It would be better to have students take out more student loans, and have a fixed amount they know they cannot spend, than to take out a credit card and get themselves started on the journey to high interest rates and even higher debt. Student loans at least have the deferment option, whereas the choices for credit cards are either pay for the rest of your life or declare bankruptcy. Credit cards like this bank on the fact that most people will not be able to pay off their balance each month eventually, and then they will start reaping in the rewards.
I really like the Kohl's credit card because they offer coupons for a certain percentage off (usually 15-20 %) all the time. They also offer free shipping on all orders for card holders often. I love these incentives and the occasional $10 off gift card I receive in the mail on my birthday and a few other times as well. I appreciate being remembered as a card holder on my birthday. I also enjoy getting something for free once in awhile! I also like their payment policy. When I have been late paying, I don't get hit with some huge $30 fee every time I'm late like I did with my GAP or OLD NAVY card. I cancelled those cards because that was just ridiculous for a $20 balance to get a $30 late fee. The only thing I don't like about Kohl's is that you have to show your card and use it with the promos. I would like to use my %20 off or $10 off without using my card. They have changed that recently for some things though.
