If you shop at a Macy's frequently this isn't a bad card to have. There is no annual fee, the interest rate is about average for a department store card, and there are some benefits to this card even though it technically has no rewards program. Very frequently we are mailed some fliers for cardholder events at the store. Usually they come with some incredible coupons for using your Macy's store card. Last month they had a denim sale that gave you a coupon for $20 off any $50 purchase of jeans on your card. They usually send out coupons monthly, and coming up around the Christmas shopping season, I'm expecting to get some great deals.
The Capital One Platinum card is a decent option if you don't have the best credit. You can certainly get a card with much better terms and benefits. No annual fee for the first year is great, but you then have to pay $19 after that. Why not get a card that offers no annual fees like the Chase Freedom card that I'm currently using? The interest rate is also pretty standard at 24.9%, but you could do much, much better if you're credit is right. Overall, I wouldn't switch to this card from my current account, but I would consider this card if my credit wasn't quite good enough to do better.
I like the Chase Freedom card because of the many benefits it offers compared to other cards I've used. Once I switched to this card I transferred a balance to it and cancelled my other credit card. Why stick with a card that charges an annual fee, and doesn't offer any kind of grace period? The interest rate is comparable or better than most other cards I've been offered, and I like that I had already earned a $100 dollar bonus within 3 weeks of opening the account.
We were remodeling our kitchen while I was away for a year. My wife applied for a Lowe's card and used it for nearly everything. The biggest expenses were all brand new appliances. They didn't charge any interest, or an annual fee, plus they gave us 5% back on our purchases. In addition to the 10% military discount I receive this card really was a no brainer. It alone saved us over a thousand dollars on our remodel, and I would highly recommend this card to anyone doing a lot of home improvements. We still use this card for many purchases from Lowe's.
