Did you know that no one may deposit a check and expect it to post immediately to their account? It's true! I asked multiple times today, and I was told that ALL checks are held until midnight following the day posted. To intimidate me, ANB personnel repeatedly told me that they could put a 3-5 day hold on my funds if they wanted. My wife and I deposited a small $3500 check from Freedom Mortgage for a home refinance and walked out, expecting funds to be posted to our account by our bank, supposedly worth $4 billion and backed by the FDIC. As it turns out, our funds did not post to our account, and the teller did not notify us this would happen. What happened is that we used the funds and paid some bills, and when we checked our mobile account, we were overdrawn. I was told multiple times after the fact that ALL checks are held until midnight. I even asked about the millionaires who banked with ANB, and again, ANB personnel repeated that ALL checks are held until midnight. My wife and I are highly educated, and we have worked in Amarillo since 1997. We serve our community because we love our community, but we are a bi-racial couple. I’m white and she is Mexican-American. We’ve been married for 31 years, and we raised our kids, who are bi-racial, in Amarillo. Both of our kids are highly educated, and they also serve the Amarillo community in a professional capacity. Do you really believe that no one can deposit a check and not have it post at ANB, a $4 billion institution backed by the FDIC? I don’t. We aren’t rich, but we are comfortable. ANB stated that they would retrain their tellers to make ANB customers aware that deposited checks won’t post until midnight, which I think is great. HOWEVER, my wife and I were racially profiled. We’re used to it. It just didn’t happen at our bank before until today. More than having tellers inform customers about the MIDNIGHT rule, ANB might check itself on the systemic racism manifested by its business practices and the behavior of its personnel.
