I’ve been a member of COFCU for 15 years. In this time, they’ve been ok, but lately they made a horrible corporate decision to deactivate everyone’s debit cards on the same day, because they mailed new contactless cards five days ago. Well, as anyone could anticipate, this was a disaster for those of us who were out of town and who became stranded without access to our money. What lunatics are making decisions there? These people created a living nightmare for countless customers, and I can’t recommend doing business with them.
In August of 2019 I opened a loan account at Commonwealth One in Harrisonburg, Va. In October of 2019 I decided to open a checking account there also. I closed my account at BB&T and had a cashier's check wrote. I deposited the check which was around $3200 in the new account. The money never showed up in my account. I was then put into contact with Shea Baum. I had a picture of the front and back of the check faxed from BB&T to Commonwealth One. Shea found the check and informed me that it had been deposited into someone else’s account. She was supposed to correct the issue, but never did. I was then in contact with multiple other people at the institution who were going to look into the situation, but all failed to do so. In August of 2020 I was again put into contact with Shea Baum. She requested that I send her the check again because she could not recall the first time. Since it has been almost a year and a half since the check was written and I have since closed my account, BB&T has been having difficulty locating the check. I have been working with BB&T since August and still no luck. This situation is in no way BB&T’s fault and is entirely Commonwealth One’s fault. I have paid off my loan so now this situation has angered me even more because I no longer owe them anything and they have $3200 of my money. I am currently in college and working a part-time job. This has caused me much stress, sleepless nights due to worrying, and it has taken up much of my time. I am very disappointed in the way this has been handled and the disrespectful customer service I have experienced. I don’t normally post things that are this negative, but I felt it would save others from this grief. I am hoping that eventually I receive the money that I worked hard for.
They are not here to serve you. I was on hold for an hour to find out the status of my locked debit card that I ordered over a month ago. I work so I cannot hold, and every time I request a call back, I never get a call back or if I do, I am working and cannot take the call. If I call my credit union, I expect to talk to someone immediately. The credit union is to serve its customers, not its customers to serve them. I have not had a debit card for over a month because of the lack of answering calls and calling customers back.

Possible the worst bank I have ever dealt with. Charges $30 for every transaction when in overdraft. They don't even give you a chance to check your account. Not sure why a debit transaction even goes through if the money is not present in the account. I then closed this account after having to pay off over $100 worth of overdraft charges. I than accidentally applied a refund from Amazon to the account I closed. I spoke to two people who said they would get back to me and never did. I finally spoke to a third person who gave me an answer and said my refund had been applied to overdraft charges on my account. OVER DRAFT FEES I ALREADY PAID!!! I think a professionally bank would contact yhe owner of the account before stealing money that does not belong to them especially on an account that is closed! Biggest scammers on the business I highly recommend doing business somewhere else.
I have used Common Wealth One FCU for quite a while now and I have no complaints. Everyone has always been very nice and I can get in and out fast when I need to. It has been a very good credit union to be a part of. I plan on staying with them for many years yet. I have told many of my friends about this excellent bank and a few of them have actually switched over to this bank instead of using their big bank that charges a lot of fees. I have been very happy about that.
Very kind actual people who answer the phones and speak to you, but beware of automatic payments. If you have two car loans at the same time, the automatic payment system sometimes applies two payments to the same car, instead of two payments to two cars. When I called to resolve the issue, they told me nothing could be done about it. I was very unhappy with that. Otherwise, the process to apply was easy (online) and the finalization process was quick and they accepted scans of your signature. Awesome.
I've been banking with Commonwealth One for over 10 years, and I've been very happy with their service the entire time. We have both checking and savings accounts through them. One of the best services they provide is overdraft protection, which you can set to pull money from your savings account to your checking account in the event that you've written too big a check! This has saved me more than once. We also have a used car loan and a home equity loan through them. Both were incredibly easy to apply for, and their response time on both was very timely. I will continue to bank with Commonwealth One for a long time, as well as recommend them to all my friends and colleagues.
I have a checking and a savings account at Commonwealth One. When I applied, you had to have some connection (live, work, or go to school) with Alexandria, VA. I believe that this has changed. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The lines usually aren't too long. You only have to deposit $5 to open a checking account, and there is no minimum balance or fees. They also give you a Visa debit card. I don't really use my savings account because interest is very low. My only complaint is that they only have branches and ATMs in the DC area. I now go to college out of state, and cannot easily access my money without ATM fees. All in all, it is a very good credit union for my needs.
They offer great services for students and faculty at JMU, where I attend. The staff is friendly and they're fast when it comes to getting things done. If you need help with anything they are there to help without hesitation. I don't like the fact that it's only one or two people at the counter and sometimes that can make things go slow. I like how my bank adviser set up my account to where I get paid: half of the money goes into my checking and the other half goes in to my savings. The location is quite convenient since it's in the middle of campus and not too far from my dorm. I like that they have two ATMs that are also close to my dorm which is very convenient when the bank closes.
