I tend to move around every few years and whenever I settle down in a new location I always look for a local credit union to use for checking account services. I prefer being able to go in to a branch to handle a checking account so online only providers won't cut it. Big banks are plagued by hidden fees and other crazy nonsense so I avoid them. Michigan First Credit Union is a great bank that I've had no bad experiences with. I've been very satisfied with what they have to offer and couldn't ask for more.
Yesterday I had the absolute worse experience with Michigan First Credit Union. The former Lending Manager now Branch Manager (Diane) at the Eastpointe MI location and one of her Lending Manager (Ken I think) are the most disrespectful and unprofessional people that I’ve met in a long time. I applied for a car loan. This would have been my third one as I paid off the previous 2 early. I wasn’t initially approved so I requested a second review as the reasoning for the decline didn’t make since to me. That one was also declined and I spoke to a lending a lending manager and it was determined that they would send it up once more. Again, I just wanted some clear reasoning for the decline. I was told that I would get a call to let me know the outcome. Hours later, I got an email approving the loan. I checked my mobile app and it was there “APRROVED AUTO LOAN”. I was excited and when Monday came I went to the bank to close on the loan. While I’m attempting to finalize I was told that I was approved for a lesser amount other than the amount that I requested. Mind you, I had already sold my car and the full payment for the car owned was being paid to Michigan First. I asked to speak the lending manager first. This man had a total disregard for the situation that they placed me in. Even began being very rude and condescending about how he could look at my credit report find and give me any reason he wanted not to approve my loan for the requested amount. Then he proceeds to tell me under no circumstances would they approve a loan for me for the amount requested, didn’t matter if I had the income to support it or a co-signer because I had to have previously had a car for that amount and the co-signer also would have had to have purchased a car for that amount. I asked them to show me the policy for that and I got nothing. Then I asked to speak to the branch manager, Dianne came to the cubicle after having a sidebar with her manager and told me even though they sent me an approval that it didn’t matter that they didn’t send any specifics, that I couldn’t get a loan for that amount because I had to work up to that amount. That I should be happy that it was even considered a third time as a courtesy to me because it should had just been disapproved. Then she just gets up and walks out. I have a great relationship with the bank and the previous managers in the past were always polite and professional. I could not believe the attitude and treatment that I received with no regard for their mistakes and the dilemma that they placed me in. I had my car being picked up by Carvana in hours and my car waiting at the dealership and now I had to go and embarrass myself because I didn’t have an approval as was stated to me. I felt humiliated, disrespected, discriminated against and it was horrible. I’m considering speaking to a lawyer about this issue to see if I have any recourse.
I reached out after reviewing my account to online chat with Tandalaya. I shared with her I was unsure where the transaction for $30 was coming from. She asked if I have set up this process with appointment with a stylist. I shared I have before, but have not currently. She shared that she closed my account without any notice or conversation! I did not have time to inquire or dig deeper to seek to understand. This was improper as she did not share what the process was or that it will be cancelled out. I am currently out of town without funds. I requested that my card be unblocked and they shared that it could not take place. For me simply inquiring leads to my card automatically being closed without notice!

ABSOLUTELY THE WORSE FINANCIAL INSTITUTION IN THE WORLD...seriously I know kids with better business models... ans im talking toddlers. No Stars is the rating. If you want to be inconvenienced, have to physically go into the back to dispute a charge even though they allow charges keep coming. This bank is operating in the 1800s before phones and internet. You have to do just about everything in person. It’s like going backwards. If you have a business this is NOT the institution for you if you want to grow outside of Michigan.
Avoid this place! They nickel and dime you with countless fees. Oh, and make sure if your payment is late only send one payment per month because they will charge you a late fee for every payment made throughout the month. I will NEVER do business with this place again.
Michigan First has a commercial stating that is a great place to work and that may be true. However in my experience it is not a great place to bank. They show very little concern for their customers and charge for any small service. The ATMs are often out of service, wait time to talk to their 24 hour teller is extremely long, reps are often nice nasty in their interactions with you. In contrast the loan officers are usually nice.

Mark Covert don’t had this man be your lender. This has been my bank since 2016 and he offered me way below the help. The other bank I am working with is offering me so much more and I informed him I will be going with them. He did not try not once to keep me to stay. I thought my bank would out shine the others with the loan but nope. So don’t go to Mark covert because I know it’s the lenders and not the bank
The secured savings loan is designed for people with a poor credit history. For this loan, your savings account will be used as collateral. The personal loan is an unsecured loan specifically designed for people with good or excellent credit, without the need for collateral. They do offer some options for those wishing to consolidate multiple debts -- the Private Student Lending PLUS Refinance Loan aids students in refinancing multiple loans. You can also take a look at their personal loan offers (https://michiganfirst.com/loans/personal-loans/), which are also a means for refinancing multiple loans. Yes, generally, they are. Each lender, however, has different eligibility requirements. Michigan First Credit Union, for instance, requires applicants to be continually enrolled in a degree-granting program and meet the school's minimum Satisfactory Academic Progress criteria to be eligible, and they have to be enrolled at least half-time for fall and spring terms.
