When I was going into 4th grade we moved to Onida, SD. My grandma set me up with a checking account that was paid for each week if I sent her a handwritten letter that was at least a full page. She put $10 in my checking account and she had me keep track of my money. The few times I visited her in Pierre, she would take me in and the tellers were kind of rude when my grandma wasn’t there. They just never seemed to like me. Once I hit 8th grade and started taking odd jobs around town to earn money (lawns, shoveling sidewalks…) I opened my own account in Onida and transferred my balance there and had Grandma close that account. She understood when I explained it in the letter and began sending me weekly checks instead. There was nothing I saw that was wrong with the institution itself. It was just those staff members who were rude and made me want to move on.
